alex rims da28-- h/nh?

I've decided to rebuild my rain/lockup/bar/beater/et al nishiki conversion's wheelset.
The existing wheelset is built around a set of formulas, so i really only need to consider the price of rims + spokes.
I initially figured i'd go with open pros as they're pretty well recieved by you guys, but i've since read too many negative/mixed reviews elsewhere to further consider them.

I recently found out about the alex rims da28. The few reviews i've found online are positive, and they seem pretty nice asthetically... has anyone ridden them?
the deep section makes me think durability (i've had good results with rolf vector comps, mavic ellipse; my gf has had similar results with deep v) when built well, and weight isn't an issue (i only ride this bike in crappy weather or when running errands).

Your thoughts? Is $75 a fair price for a new set of hoops?

Alex rims are fine. They have a bad reputation because they often come stock on low-end bikes. Its usually a problem with the cheap spokes, hubs, and crappy machine build, not the rims. I have no experience with the da28, but I've built 26" wheels with alex rims and they built up as nicely as any Mavic I have ever built with. $75 is half of what you would pay for a pair of Mavics and probably just as good.
Hipster dumbasses will not respect you as much...thats probably the only major difference.

Don't know if your considered spokes yet, but if you ask me, wheelsmith db14s (2.0mm at ends, 1.7mm in middle) are the best double butted spokes for the price and lighter than the basic DT double butted spokes (which are 2.0 at ends and 1.8 in the middle).

edit....I just looked up the da28 rim. 480 grams isn't bad for that depth.

Our entire shop runs these rims. They are strong and bombproof - T.O messengers run these on our handbuilt wheels everyday with no problem. Open pros compared to Da28? Pfft, DA28 hands down. Cheaper, stronger and just an overall better value.

Alex makes bad rims and they also make some good rims too; DA28's are good. Forumulas on these rims make a very nice in between crap and fancy wheelset. You will not be disappointed.

I just had a set of wheels built with these and they're great. I used DT Competition spokes, alloy nipples, a DT front hub, and an ENO eccentric rear-- so far I have no complaints about them whatsoever.

I just swapped out my cheapo Jalco wheels (that came with my Motobecane Messenger) and rebuilt my wheels on the same Formulas hubs with these rims. I like them because like Mihlbach said - they are fairly light for 29mm depth rims - I also like them because they have a rim wear indicator (I run brakes). The only thing I find annoying is that the machined sidewalls are thicker in some parts than others so the braking isn't even - it's a bit grabby at some parts of the rim. However, if you're riding brakeless - it doesn't matter.
