skid question (not what you think)
yesterday after getting home from a ride, leaned my bike against the sofa, took a few steps and heard a gunshot. that was my tube blowing up. now when i looked at the tire, i noticed that the tire was about 1/5 of the way off the rim. my question is whether or not the force of the blowout is powerful enough to have done that, or if it is possible to work a tire off of a rim my skidding and whipping your rear tire back and forth.

If it wasn't seated properly to begin with, I could see it happening.
I once drunkenly replaced the rear tire on my Klein. When I took it to the trails the next day, I rolled that ****er right off of the rim. I'm just glad I didn't replace the front tire, or I would have been toast.

Just the blow out did that.
I was once a group ride and at ~30mi break stop someone noted that one riders tire had a 3" long sliver of tube poking out between rim and tire bead. I was amazed it had not blown out long before that - the point is a tire/tube can have major install issues like this and still ride fine with lots of luck, but when the luck ends...

It sounds like you have the causal chain reversed. The tire bead going off the rim causes the tube to bubble out rapidly and then explode. Inside the tire the tube is under much more pressure than it could hold on its own without bursting. The tire keeps that from happening, if it's seated properly.
Edit: noisebeam may also be right; you might have left part of the tube pinched under the bead.

well i was pretty sure that it was on properly. im pretty thorough when i do stuff like that, but i suppose it is possible. last time i had changed the tube was like a month ago. and i ride a coaster, so i almost always skid stop. what is casual chain though?

Yeah, had a chunk of tube pinched on my Pista, made it about 1/2 mile before it decided to balloon out, rub off a bunch of paint and blow out. Also overheated a rim on a descent, the tube blew the bead off the rim.

I used to have some really cheap bontrager tires on my bike. When I put them on they went on extremely easily. I didn't need a tire lever or anything I just used my hands without even really pushing to hard. At the time i was really stoked that it wasn't a pain in the tukus. A few weeks later the same thing happened I had a flat tire with part of the tire falling off the rim. I now make sure to get tires that have a rep for being a pain in the tukus to put on.

Have you (not you mander, the OP) inspected the tire for anything unusual?

If it lasted a month before blowing out that's pretty weird. Usually my bad tire installations only last for a few hours at best.

nothing unusual in the tire, but the hole in the tube, is more of a gash as its about 3 inches long. also after i put up the original post, i was taking my wheel off to change the tube and the last 1/4 inch of the axle bole snapped off. and one of my spokes is severely bent. im not having a good bike day

a good way to avoid pinch flats is some baby powder in between the tire and the tube - this helps reduce friction between the two allowing the tube to inflate evenly and reduce pinch/twist issues.

Definatly a poorly installed tire. I've had this happen several times some while riding some when the bike was just sitting there and I went to get another tool or refill my glass of wine. The three inch gash sounds pretty standard for that kind of blowout as well as the bead coming off the rim. Oh, by the way, I SUCK at installing tires.

Back in my youth, I didn't know what pinch flats were, and I would blow out tubes one right after another. The gun shot sound definitely made me jump.

There are two kinds of 'pinch' flats.
Most folks call a flat caused by a under-inflated tire (relative to rider weight and riding style) going over a sharp edge/rock, causing the tube to be squeeze between rim and road object cutting the tube usually in two places (like a snakebite), a pinch flat. These occur with correctly installed tubes.
The other kind being discussed here is where the tube is improperly installed and gets part of itself squeezed between the rim and the tire or if the tube is twisted/kinked in the tire causing it to squeeze against itself when inflated. These may blow during the very first inflation or may last a few minutes to hours and in some cases can even be used before suddenly blowing with no specific event just prior to blowing. I don't usually hear these called a pinch flat.

could be your rims have no ridginess on the inside, just flat rise, seeing you have coaster break and all. are they old steel ones? I compensate for this with good beaded tires and compulsively watching them spin, which isn't safe.
