Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

+1 skidding is overrated and expensive. Also dangerous; tire blowouts while riding are not fun.

But if thinking "I'll score big with the chicks with my mad skidding skillz" helps you sleep at night; replace that cog with a 20 or even 22. You'll be skidding in no time. To go fast, pedal faster.

Who ever came up with the idea that big gears are bad for the knees?

How you end
Up with 52 tooth
chainring in the first place
before using smaller
chainring first and
learning how to skid?

Make sure you invest in some good tires. Might I suggest some Vittoria Diamantes? They come in all sorts of hip colors to match your rims.

hahahahaha

i'm new to fixed riding as well.
i'm running 48/15 and i
want lower gear ratio for
moar skidmarx plz

naw not really. i'm just running the stock **** that came with my bike. i'm eventually going to get a cross brake lever and put a front brake on there but right now i'm riding brakeless on easy streets. i get how to slow down and stop but it's kinda hard. i get how to skid but it's still kinda hard (yes, i dry hump the stem and lift up on the front pedal). i'd figure a lower gear ratio would help with that and trackstands (not just for cool points but as a usefull skill). fyi i'm in flat houston tx and dont live in the city. just wanted to try fixed because it looks fun.

so can anyone explain to me how this whole gear inches thing works? what it means? i dont even think i'm using "gear ratio" right.

and i have a flip/flop hub is there a way to mount another cog on the freewheel side?
