IRO sizing

I ordered a 56cm Mark V and I'm about 5'10" with a 33.35" inseam, would the 59cm be better for me?

SeanBonham 04-11-08 01:03 PM

I'm 5'11" and I ride a 56cm with a 110mm stem. 56cm should be good for ya.

what is your inseam though? because that makes a huge difference

bryanhayn 04-11-08 01:23 PM

I think you should've gone with the 59. I have a 35" inseam and I got the 62 size. Fits great.

sfcrossrider 04-11-08 01:28 PM

I think you'll be fine.

yes the 59 would have been better. I'm 5'11 w/ a 34.5 inseam and the 59 fits perfect for me. maybe that one will work out for you though

Huge difference, I know. Can't remember, I have not measured since I bought the bike a year ago. I was all freaked out about the IRO sizing until I got mine and found that it fits great! There is 15+ threads on BSSSFG about this (search please).

gfrance 04-11-08 01:54 PM

I'm a hair under 5'10" and just built up the 59cm and it fits right. I called Tony and he personally gave me his word that the 59cm is correct for me. It sounds big but if fits more like a 56cm/57cm in other frames. The 59cm is from the BB to the TOP of the seat tube. To the center it's 55cm. Call Tony for definitive advise.

The 56cm will technically work. You can get it to fit. But will it be ideal?

I also really dislike riser stems and with the right size frame, I can run a flat stem (with some spacers).

petebow 04-11-08 03:57 PM

im 6'2" with a 34" standover and ride the mark v 62 with a 90mm stem and risers (i like to be pretty upright). my guess would be the 59 might be a better fit for you.

Quinn8it 04-11-08 04:41 PM

I think stand over and inseam are the wrong way to fit any bike! I am just under 5'10" and I ride the 53cm Mark V. The thing is I have short'ish legs and ape like long arms. I have a 30" inseam so the stand-over on the 53cm happens to be correct, but I like a 665mm cockpit length. with the 53cm Mark V's 54cm top tube length, plus a 100mm stem I am very comfortable out on the horns of my Bullhorns. If I was riding drops I would run a 120mm stem.

I think you should generally be shooting for a stem length of 110mm or 120mm based on your cockpit length and effective top tube length.

chevahh 04-11-08 05:35 PM

and just like all of those threads i've read before, IRO is very bad at getting back. I emailed them and left them a message and they haven't gotten back. I wouldn't want them to start making the 56cm and then have to stop and make a 59cm

bryanhayn 04-11-08 05:50 PM

call them. and keep calling till they answer.

pazzmore 04-11-08 06:34 PM

I think you should have gotten a 53. Smaller frame is better for throwing around and you can always raise the seat and add a longer stem if needed.

This is horrible advice. I don't know if it's meant to be a wind up or not, but please ignore it.

pazzmore 04-12-08 12:23 PM

whatever, i'm 5'9" with a 31" inseam, and i would've been bummed if my 53 Mark V was any bigger. dude's got 2 inches on my inseam (first time i've ever said that).. and based on my experience, i think he will be perfectly happy with a 56cm but stoked on a 53cm... (59cm too large).

Ziemas, i see you don't even ride an IRO... so dude should probably ignore you and listen to those of us with the frame in question.

i prefer a bike that i'm in control of, not the other way around.

The 'raise the seatpost and add a longer stem' option is the last one someone uses when they are trying to make a frame which is too small fit. It's bad advice for any frame.

FWIW, the common word is that IRO frames run small.

you need to call, they are great to deal with but don't wait for a return email. small business = personal service= to busy to answer every email. I am 5 10. 32 and my 56 fits great. (don't know inseam size)

gfrance 04-12-08 03:11 PM

To the OP: You really need to speak with Tony about this. You are getting a big range of opinions, (and some bad information). Short of that find a shop that stocks IROs and test ride one if you can.

My money is still on the 59cm but the 56cm could work also. The 53cm is out of the question too small. Period. Basically, subtract 3cm from the stated IRO fit to normalize it to other bikes. So the 59 is essentially a 56, the 56 is a 53, and the 53 is a 50!!. You are absolutely too large for a 50cm frame.

chevahh 04-12-08 03:20 PM

alright so emailing is out of the question. what time is the best to call them? I live in california so the time in Pennsylvania is 3 hours after my time. I've called them at all hours of the day and I actually had somebody pick up but nobody answered. i was confused. but do you guys know what the best time to get to them would be?

chevahh 04-12-08 03:56 PM

nevermind. I just called him literally right after I posted. Tony answered. Very nice. very friendly and he recommended a 59cm. Sweet.

I'm the exact same sizing. 5'10" 30" inseam. Looking to pick up a Mark V soon. Thanks.

Hey Chevahh,
What size Madison are you riding? The Large Madison compares close in tt length to the 56cm Mark V, and the X-L Madison compares in tt length to the 59cm. The Main difference appears to be stand over height which is like 2cm higher on the Schwinn's.

*sniff* my madison just got stolen. but anyway. I used to ride a Large madison. but I got all my sizing issues and what not resolved. I called tony and I'm getting a 59cm

sitwell 02-19-09 02:24 AM

An old thread, but I could use some advice. I'm pretty sure I want to get an IRO Angus. I'm 6' 1" with a 32" inseam. I'm not sure if I should go for a 56 or 59. I've read they tend to run a bit small, so I'm leaning toward a 59. The top tube seems to be about right(57cm), but I'm not sure if the standover(33in) would be suitable. FWIW, a 56 Motobecane Messenger fits about perfectly. Maybe someone's ridden both and can compare sizing wise. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Inseam and seat tube measurements aren't aren't as important as top tube length and head tube length. I fit based on reach(tt length) and how high or low i want the bars(head tube length) in relation to the saddle for the kind of riding i'm doing on that bike.
