Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

wow...

On a different note...

CHEN, take care of that wound, heal up, and get back on the bike.

Yeah I was involved in that conversation. Lets see what I had to say.

the thing with saying a brake wouldnt help is that the theory is that with a brake you would ride differently, you would have approached that car is a different manner. I can see that but I can also see how brakeless makes people ride defensively. To each their own though. lets not make this a brake debate.

Tinydr. You're stupid. Of course someone can ride fixed gear safely without brakes, but what the **** is the point? Why not ride as hard as you can always and then have your brake to stop you in emergencies? I'm sure I could do fine brakeless, but it involves taking risks that I don't want to and a reduction in aggressiveness.

I just can't see a benefit.

I'm going to start riding platforms now because it makes less sense and if I am really careful I won't get hurt. Who cares if my riding isn't as fun/fast anymore anyways?

Thank you sir, may I have another?

If you'll look at other posts I've made I've pointed out that I've been planning on putting a front brake back on... mostly for the first reason you've suggested; I'd rather be able to ride all out. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the gearing necessary to be reasonably sure I'll be able to stop a brakeless fixed... for whatever reason it doesn't feel quite right.

You don't have to see the benefit, that's ok. I'm not sure there even needs to be a benefit that is measurable by you?

As for your second post, I'll let that speak for itself.

Chen, heal up soon. I've seen you around Boston before. I ride a black IRO with bullhorns, but no longer ride it in Boston b/c I work outside the city now. I was actually hit by a Children's Hospital bus last summer b/c he switched lanes w/o looking and blasted me onto the sidewalk. I lost part of my cheek too (the other end).

Actually it was over at the 'rotary' at Charles and Cambridge st by Mass General. I don't know if they usually make runs over there but it certainly confused me as to why I get hit by a hospital bus next a hospital when its the wrong bus. Either way, I was wearing gauze diapers for a while after that, and found that riding was actually easier than walking when missing part of your arse

that is pretty weird... I think Children's might also be a Big-H teaching hospital, maybe they... yeah ok who the hell knows?

Ouch, I didn't get what you meant about a cheek on the other end the first time you said it... I could see that would really suck!

Damn there are a lot of people reporting crazy injuries.

Yah stairs sucked. Anyway, I'm supposed to race at Palmer in 6 hours and haven't gone to bed yet. I noticed that too dr. I blame it on spring happening earlier (than usual) this year and drivers checking out all the pretty girls.

That blows homey. But you're okay so dont let the cars win. Ride, ride again. Just get the heezy off Comm. I'm orig from boston and having ridden in that hood from circa 1982-
I say that street blows for bikes.

Peace aand vitamin e on the scars+stitches. The stuff works.
