Izumi V chain master link

I did search but I could not find how tight you tighten the screw on the master link. I have never had one come loose, but on a new chain when you tighten it down really tight, it seems to bind but after a while it is smooth. How tight do you guys screw it in?

?
screwdriver...

ps, the link is direction specific. if you can't get it one way, flip the chain. the hole on one side is larger than the hole on the other, which makes a difference.

Throw it out, dude.

Masterlinks are no good, and that one is notorious for coming lose.

I have izumi super toughness on both my bikes with no master link.

Awesome chain, crap master link.

Master links are totally fine and those NJS style are especially solid.
The only defective link is generally the installer.

Screws come lose, chain doesn't.

Deathhare is right, it's probably fine. Cause it's njs. Like vivalo.

Ive been riding an njs chain with the screw master link and havent touched it in well over a year.
Maybe you need a screwdriver tutorial or something.

I've been riding the same chain for over a year with no screw link so suck it.

How you been, deathhare?

It's getting pretty lonely here, no?

I never said that running no master link was bad. That's fine too.
I only said that running with one wasnt a bad idea.

I've heard many stories about those masterlinks coming unscrewed while riding. While I approve of them in general, I don't think the njs type is great for street riding. We have to keep in mind that, although NJS means it's tough and high quality, it was designed to be raced for 2 minutes and then overhauled.

But just like everything else, it's gonna work great for some people and not for others.

for some reason i don't imagine you putting in too many hard miles.

so considering what ive heard from others i still dont totally trust the screw master link.

Thanks for the advice on using/not using the master link. I know they are direction specific and I haven't had any problems running one.
But I was just wondering if you really crank down hard tightening it, or just tighten it moderately. My concern was if over tightening will cause some sort of bind in the chain.
Does my question make any sense???

Tighten it till it's tight.

Or get rid of it.

Any bind in the chain will work itself out as your screw becomes loose.

I put a lot hard miles commuting 20 miles a day, 5 days a week...plus any riding i did on the weekends.
Recently, not as much.

Maybe ive been lucky or my lack of worry has kept me safe.
Itll probably fall out tommorow.

Bikes: SE Quadrangle, '82 Venus NJS, '03 Bianchi Pista, '86 P'sonic Mt Cat, Fat City Yo Eddy '91 + '93, B'cuda A2E, '86 Trek Elance 400, '88 Centurion D.Scott Expert, '88 Fisher Mt Tam (and no longer with me: SE OM Flyer, Umezawa/B-stone/Samson NJS)

I've never had problems with my Izumi or HKK with those screw-links. I ride 30-40 kilometer days 2-3 times a week with lots of shorter jaunts in between. I tighten it down until just before it starts to bind, and check every other week or so when I go over bike stuff. no problems yet.
