Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

skateboard or fixed gear?

If you had to go down a steep hill would you do it on a fixed gear or a skateboard?

This kid walked into the shop I work at today and wanted to sell his Langster because he was moving and getting more into skateboarding anyway. LAME.

with skateboarding, you could put your foot down. with a fixed gear bicycle, you can "resist" teh pedal motion or skid.. or most importantly use your BRAKES!!

fixed gear - skating down a big hill sucks, especially if your trucks are loose. at least with a fixed gear, you can really keep yourself in control, while on a skateboard, things can get out of hand in a hurry.

Every pothole or blemish on the road is bigger on a skateboard.

And once you bomb an SF hill on a skateboard you can't pull a Pabst tallboy out of your Chrome messenger bag and celebrate with your "crew". It doesn't look as cool... unless you're the guy with the camera.

Bombing a hill on a skateboard is whole lot more fun that doing it on a (brakeless) fixed gear. Fixed gear, for me, was kind of a compromise between my geared bike and my board.

Don't really understand the situation where I would think of that...
If I was out skating I would ride down on my board.
If I was on my bike I would ride down on my bike.
I don't find myself in a situation that I have a skateboard and a bike and go "hmmm which would I use?"

I like both, although I would probably be more comfortable on my board, and powerslides are fun and a great way to control speed, a lot easier to bail off of a board, not that I would need to bail off of my bike since I have a break. Plus i've been skating off and on since 87, so at some level I'm still more comfortable on my board in certain situations. Haven't been skating much recently though, got to change that.

There is a thrill I get when splitting a lane while passing cars that just doesn't happen on a skateboard.

I'd way rather bomb the hill via track bike. I skated for 5 years and still do it occassionally, but if you want a thrill on a board while going down hill, snowboarding is really where it's at, skateboarding just doesn't compare to carving fresh powder or a just-groomed courdoroy hill.

ahh. i was always curious about your name. i got it now. i have a vanguard and my roomate has a dervish.

i say skateboard. i have a speedboard (kebbek comishin) and that's exactly what it's made for. speed is so much more exhilarating on that thing than any other form of transportation i've used, fixed gears included. i feel more comfortable stopping on it than my fg as well d:

fullbag speedcruzer with 200mm jimz's (all black), biltins, and 81a grippins, set of slide gloves, leathers... i'll bomb any hill you throw at me

or the rogers bros. with pogos, grizzlies (40*, think about it), strikers (77mm 81a) (or lemon bigzigs) and biltins.... tis sweet

ive maxed out at around 85-90km/h... that was after a corner passing a redneck in his truck

track bike on a big hill doest compare to the feeling of a speed board, sorry. but snowboard? never tried, and plus when do the popo chase you for snowboarding

I'll go faster on a skateboard, so I pick that.

But I'd rather go uphill on a bike.

Are we talking skateboard or longboard here? Out of my quicer of 34 boards, I've got a few that I'd choose over a fixed gear for descents.
