Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? First Fixed Gear... Should I make it a good one???

Im just getting into fixed gears, I rode BMX for years. I started loving the way fixed gears looked after I saw my friends Pista Concept. I now have enough money to get a new bike. I was at my LBS looking at a IRO Mark V. I know a lot of people on here love those bikes and I like them too. Fortunetly I have a chance of getting my hands on a new 2008 Concept. Here is my delemma, should I get a IRO for a starter bike or should I go all out and build a Pista Concept???

The IRO will run me about $700 for a complete.
The Pista will be $700 for the frameset.

I know that the Pista will probably cost me over twice as much as the IRO to build, but boy is it pretty to look at.

What is a guy to do?

P.S. The girlfriend says get the cheaper one and take her to Hawaii.

Get the IRO as you may not even like riding fixed.

You can't take your girl to Hawaii for $700. Get the Pista and then use it to pull some less demanding girl who is happy with Southwest $49 fun fares to Cleveland.

She's is not demanding. She just doesn't get it. No $700 won't get me to Maui, but it will sure make it easier.

Do you need a really expensive bike? If you're going to be locking it up, are you comfortable locking up something that cost you 1500 bucks and leaving it for awhile?

you don't really need a really bling track bike, but it's your money.

Get the Concept and **** Hawaii. You'll just end up replacing all the IRO parts anyway. And Hawaii is way WAY overrated.

i'd do something in the middle.

buy a nice frame, but not a $700 frame, and build it up with nice parts.

I think the real question is, what will this bike you buy be used for?

get the concept, if you change your mind you can turn it around on ebay and get almost 100% of what you paid for it, if youre really lucky maybe even more.

buy the IRO - it's a quality bicycle with geometry that's excellent for street usage.

So this really helped me. I live in NYC and I would be using this bike for fun and a commute sometimes. I can't really see myself feeling comfortable with locking my "Bling Track Bike" up outside. I would worry the entire time. So I think I'm just going to head over the Bike Doctor in Brooklyn and pick up a IRO. I am pretty sure I'll upgrade the parts sooner or later. When I get tired of it, I'll get a concept and transplant. Thanks guys!

P.S.

If anyone wants the frame I have on hold at a shop, PM me and Ill pass it on. I have it on hold for a day or two. Its a 2008 Pista Concept 55cm.
