Smallest cog?

What is the smallest cog available that would work on a FG? Who supplies it? Havent been able to find anything smaller than 12T. Thanks in advanced, HR.

Peedtm 05-26-08 11:03 PM

Any smaller and it won't be able to thread on to the hub (You'll need a specific BMX hub.) Also, if you go smaller you'll need to run a half link chain.

edit:
Heres an 8 tooth

edit2: I should mention this will be ss, not fixed

Out of curiosity, why would you want the smallest cog possible?

Peedtm 05-26-08 11:21 PM

^weight savings, duh.

c0urt 05-26-08 11:39 PM

I am curious to , the smallest dura-ace cog is 12t
smaller than that your teeth are not big enough.
I can't run a bigger ring up front up front because it will not clear my chain stays
and i just moved to an area where I spin out very often.

trons 05-27-08 12:06 AM

da only goes to 13. superbe pro goes down at 12 and you need a special lockring.
12 is the smallest you can get.

Sixty Fiver 05-27-08 12:14 AM

Apparently... Phil makes an 11 tooth that also requires a special lock ring.

Aside from those folks who run fixed folders where a really small rear cog is needed for gearing, I can't see any reason why anyone would want to run such a small cog as anything below 14 teeth really cuts into the drives efficiency, can run harshly, and will wear out extremely quickly.

What kind of gearing would a person be looking at ?

trons 05-27-08 12:24 AM

it sure isn't here..
http://philwood.com/Track%20Cogs.htm

pretty sure 12 is physically the smallest you can make them

sivat 05-27-08 12:39 AM

The threading on a track hub has a 1.375" diameter. a 12t cog has a pitch circle diameter of 1.9", measured at approximately the middle of the tooth. That means you have less than 1/4" of material between the threads and the bottom of the tooth. Less than that and things will break. Also, you will start to have interference between the chain and the outer edge of the lockring.

It is and you need a stepped lockring to clear the chain.

Just so you know. If you click on the link, it is not there.

Maybe he was agreeing to the, "12 is the smallest you can make them," comment...?

~Stuart~ 05-27-08 03:52 AM

oh, maybe. i though it was a "there is 11 you just cant see it" comment

if not, my bad.

I want a difficult ratio to build up the strength in my legs. This is part of the reason I started riding my bike again and why I chose to ride FG.

Thanks all for the input, it looks as though I will go with 55T x 12T. Currently I run 55T x 19T.;)

Jabba Degrassi 05-27-08 10:25 AM

Can I touch you(r quads)?

That's a massive jump. Before you blow out your knees maybe you should take a bit smaller steps......

55x12 is 120 gear inches. That's more than olympic track racers use to win gold medals. I don't think there's any benefit to getting a 12t cog, unless you don't really like going up hills, ever.

Yoshi 05-27-08 10:59 AM

Graeme Obree ran a 52x12 for his hour record and had the highest development meters (9.25) of any hour record holder (as far as my research tells me). I seem to remember hearing that someone had used a 55x11 (if they had, obviously it was with a custom hub/cog) but can't seem to find any info on that.

Indurain used a 59x13 but according to my sources had 8.86 development meters suggesting that either there is a typo or Indurain used smaller wheels.

Nims 05-27-08 11:01 AM

55x12 probably won't be hard enough for you. You should offer a taxi-esque service where people just ride on your back while you take them up hills. That'll do the trick.

c0urt 05-27-08 11:37 AM

i run like 40x12 on 650c rims
for about 72 gi's
so for me it isnt so bad
I just cant change my front chain ring. no clearance

We already do that as part of our PT program, thanks for the idea though.:)

The benefit would depend on your goal, mine is strength. There arent any hills in my route.:thumb:

Suntour offered an 11 tooth cog. Since chain clearance is an issue, the cog was undercut and you needed to use a special lockring.

OT: While googling Suntour Cog I was presented with this.
