'oh, hi, im new'

not looking to spend too much... but dont want to buy a turd either.

so....

08 giant bowrey VS. 08 specialized langster 'boston'

which one would you buy or would you get a _______ at around the same price point?

thanks in advance.

i've ridden neither but have heard that the langster is better. i've also heard that the bowery is tough as hell and can take a beating.

bikevic 06-03-08 04:19 AM

i suggest bowery because it's cheaper
it looks good as well

M-Dub 06-03-08 06:54 AM

I bought the Bowery last October (my first fixed-gear bike and first "new" bike since I was in middle school) and highly reccommend it. It might not be the best looking bike around but it handles very well, is relatively light, and as others have said it is a tough, durable bike. The only upgrade I've done is the wheels (switched to Mavics) and that was just for the hell of it, not a necessary upgrade.

that one looks good except by the time i do the cdn conversion and ship it i could have just bought the specialized locally. the giant seems to be the most cost effective bang for the buck but i wait til more of you chime in.

91MF 06-03-08 08:44 AM

oh, and im 6'2" should i be looking at a 58, 59, 60, 61?

jpdesjar 06-03-08 08:50 AM

not sure about the sizing on the specialized or giant...i am riding a 56cm steamroller and i am 6'0"
is there a shop where you can get fitted for one?

lanOGiro 06-03-08 10:41 AM

I'm 6'2" and ride a 60cm, and it's perfect. You can go smaller, 57 is about your limit, but definitely dont go bigger.

lanOGiro 06-03-08 10:44 AM

I'm 6'2" and ride a 60 and it's perfect. 58 59 and 60 all work, but you don't need a 61.

parkr 06-04-08 12:02 AM

what about an '08 masi? otherwise I'd go for the giant bowery over the langster.

thadcombs 06-04-08 12:31 AM

soma rush FTW

I was in the same boat and After riding both went with the Bowery. It just seemed to fit me better and feels stronger. It's a good bike for the money, and not as heavy as everyone says...The carbon on the langster is nice but I just liked the bowery better, and it was a better deal...

91MF 06-04-08 10:01 AM

looks like im probably going to go with the bowrey. thanks for all your input. i'll be lurking and if this goes the way of my cars i should be asking about modifying and swaping parts soon enough.

Buy a fuji track... Way cooler rides awsome. Barspins aren't easy on it though.

jbucky1 06-04-08 04:46 PM

Some good bikes to consider.
- Raleigh rush Hour
- Soma Rush
- Masi Special Fixe

the Soma is the more expensive and is closr to true track geometry than the Rush Hour and the Masi. all are good.

I think teh above bikes ride smoother than the Langster. Mainly because of material.

Being 6ft 2, I cannot tell your proportions, but you will be in the range of an effective top tube length of 58 to 60cm. i would guess no bigger than 60 and a 58 or 59 may feel the most comfortable.

frankstoneline 06-04-08 04:53 PM

In that price range, masi speciale hands down...probably my favorite off the peg FG available.
or,
Kilo TT and use the extra 3 bills to fix parts when they break and to put a brake on it.

ok so a friend found a bianchi pista semi-locally for sale but its a 57 and im wondering at 6'2" with size 12s am i just going to have a sore back and be sticking my feet in the front spokes aka eating **** on this thing or what?

ScottNotBombs 06-11-08 03:19 PM

One of my friends bought a Windsor The Hour for $300 and he's pretty happy with it...
My first fixed gear was a Miyata Eighty SE with just a different rear wheel and right now I'm building another Miyata with a suicide hub... I'm cheap I guess.

scooterist136 06-11-08 03:30 PM

I just bought my first SS/Fixie. I got a Felt Curbside. I'm 6'0" and the 56cm fits me well. A 58cm may be better for you. The Curbside is pretty light and is geared at a really comfortable 39/16, which is helpful for my learning to ride better.

I suggest you buy this Eddy Merckx Trackbike for only $199.00!

I would suggest that you get the guys at your LBS to size you, rather than a bunch of knobs who are posting on an online forum a million miles away.

i ride a bowery, takes a beating quite nicely... gets tossed up against hard metal for lock ups, been dumped a few times, largely neglected through the winter, it holds up fine. Not the flashiest bike in the world, but it's a good value and I'm mostly just looking to avoid getting my sht stolen.
