I just moved into a new apartment and found an old Huffy 10-speed in the basement. Though I haven't been seeking a frame for a fixed gear, this got me thinking finally starting a new project. Have some questions though...

Is the frame of the Huffy even worth saving? I'd obviously strip it and throw on a new wheel set. Paint it with a black theme and use it for various city riding. I've wanted something that is completely trimmed down and not have to worry about using 3 locks when riding to the grocery store. I'm basically just looking for a reliable beater.

I also have an old(er) Trek 1100 mountain bike I converted to a commuter but find myself riding my road bike more often. I'm might consider using that frame instead as its lighter but the geometry is obviously different. That, and I haven't checked the drop outs.

Is it reasonable to use either of those frames or should I just start hunting garage sales?

For a beater fixed, both frames are worth it, depending on the riding style you favor. Check the drop-outs on both frames first... hopefully they're horizontal or semi-horizontal.

The Huffy has semi-horizontal drops but if I remember correctly, the Trek has vertical.

The main use for the bike would be for running errands and just cruising around with the wife. I don't want to put so much wear/tear on my road bike and keep it in shape for my morning rides. I also think the wife would like me on a SS when I'm with her so I don't have the temptation to ride fast and leave her a quarter mile behind me.

i'd ditch the trek, especially with vertical dropouts.
