ok I hope I don't piss anyone off... but I just bought a entry level road bike for dirt cheap only to upgrade my 27" heavy A** wheels on my current single speed ride (along with the stem, pedals, saddle, & a few other things... ) anyways,

The rear hub off the new bike has eight cogs on it, when I buy a 16 tooth cog to convert it to one speed, will the "cassette" remain a "freewheel" instead of locking onto the wheel as a fixed gear? I don't want to go fixie, (i know I know)

If I understand you correctly, yes, it's a freewheel hub, and will remain so.

what is the best deal to go with, I'm going to buy an 18 tooth cog... it seems all the online retailers label all the cogs for single speed conversions, I see no conversion kits for fixed gear...

Can anyone tell me of a clear way to tell if I'm purchasing a "single speed/freewheel" conversion as opposed to a "fixed gear" conversion? I'd hate to buy a kit online & wait a week to find I bought the wrong conversion kit.

the only "fixed gear conversion kit" is a new rear wheel (or at least hub)
