Axle conversion - quickrelease to solid

While shoping for bike for my daughter, I picked up a free 700cc 36 spoke (low flange) wheel for the front of my fix ~ no longer do I have to borrow the one of my other bike. But it's a QR axle. Is converting it as simple just buying the appropriatly sized threaded bar stock and cutting it to fit?

Your favorite LBS should have appropriate solid axles available for less than $10. It has been a long time since I bought one and think it was a hollow axle which cost around $10 so a solid one should be cheaper. I don't think your typical bar stock at Home Depot has the proper threading for the hub cones.

Why would you want to change a quick release front wheel to solid axle?
