This also works fine. (Also very cheap).

1/8 cogs work fine. I would pony up and get an EAI or Dura Ace cog over those cheapy formula cogs.

But a 3/32 should work just as well as a 1/8, right?

How to install chain guard

Got in my Dawes SST today and it came with a chain guard which I feel I need as I commute in pants a lot. But I can't figure out how to fit it on the bike. Has anyone installed theirs and could help me out?

Thanks.

The rear brake cable has 3 little rubber "doughnuts," but where do they go? Do they go into the frame brake bosses (like a gasket)?? That's where I put them but it doesn't seem right.

How tall are you exactly? Im 6'4 and the stock seatpost is plenty big..if you went higher than the stock seat post, I can't imagine your riding position is going to be good...

Any other 61cm lager/SSt owners feel like the top tube is a little short?

I couldn't get it to fit either. I think it's a practical joke.

in my research I found this regarding the Dimension stem you mentioned:
https://www.koat.com/money/4454074/detail.html

I'm looking for a quality stem for my Dawes SST 52cm. myself...I'm 5'9.5", have relatively shorter legs and longer torso, the top tube height is perfect on the 52, but i need a longer/higher reach for the handlebars.

anyone have any good suggestions for a quality stem for me? and an explanation of the degrees in simple words? all the explanations in my google searches and i'm still confused.

THANKS!!!!

A good cheap-ish stem upgrade would be a Ritchey MTB stem. They have a 25.4 clamp diameter making them compatible with a lot of nice inexpensive bars like Nittos.

Clink, I am "only" 6 feet 1 inch, but I have VERY long legs (cycling inseam is about 37 inches) and a very short torso. One of ther reasons I bought the 61 cm SST is because it has a relatively short top tube. With the stock 8 cm stem, it fits me perfectly...my fit almost duplicates that of my custom geometry road bike.

That being said, if a person has "normal" proportions, I think he/she would find the 61 cm SST top tube to be a few cm too short....so I would steer you towards the motobecane frames (if you are BD oriented) or if you already have your SST you could swap out the crappy stock stem for a longer one.

I'm 6'3" with slightly longer legs. I thought it fit great once I switched to a 110mm stem. In stock form it was cramped though.

I'm 6'7", and yeah, the seatpost was too short for me. I bought a $23.00 black Kalloy SP-342 Uno Seatpost (27.2 mm x 350mm) from Universal Cycles. At my height, I'm sure any qualified bike mechanic is going to tell me my riding position is weird, but I seem to pass everyone, and I feel good up there.

One word of warning — I've had the bike since August, and swapped in some new pedals. The left pedal, which is the one I usually push off on, wasn't tightened sufficiently, it seems, so my commute to work was interrupted one day when I discovered the pedal had stripped the crank arm.

It was easy to swap out for another generic 170mm crank arm, but my advice is double-checking that your pedals are nice and tight before you head out there for a long ride on this bike: the crank arms are a cheap enough alloy that a loose pedal will make confetti of the threading.

Huh? The TT on these seems about right. Longer than my MED 54 C-T SCOTT S60 aand my MED Compact Roads

This is why I bought the SST over a Track bike.

if anything, SSTs have long top tubes. If you want a short TT, get the Kilo TT

They're cold-forged 6061 T6 aluminum. There's nothing wrong with them. Put your pedals on right.

Look at the chart. We're talking about larger sizes. 61 ST and 57 TT.

I got this bike on friday a few days ago. No problem with shipping, everything went well. The bike is super easy to put together.

i didnt ride it at ALL when it had its free wheel. I "fixed" it the next day. got myself the lockring and a 16t rear cog. took the rear brake out, and just getting a feel for the bike still.

Gearing is pretty good for me. i wouldnt mind trying out a few other things though. i put about 20 miles on it in the past 2 days. Its nice. sorta light. it doesnt take bumps very well. it shakes my arms pretty good when going over a decent sized hump.

anyone know what i can do to improve that? new fork? the crank is making a tiny bit of noise, but i heard from people that its not unusual for that to happen early. So i might switch it out for something a little better..

its a good starting fixie... im complelty happy with it. i dont mind changing a few things here and there. i like messing with things.

This might sound unusuall to some, but im just about 5'10". and i got myself a 52cm. It fits be well. i have pretty short legs. and a long torso. With the saddle up right about half way, i like the "stance" that im sitting at, and im super comfortable on it, and happy.

For anyone that has had one for a bit, what else would you look at to replace?

Something I found quite interesting.

I just bought a cog and lock ring for my Dawes SST.

I bought a 16t and in conjecture with the chainring (48t?) I noticed it's pretty damn difficult to skid stop with it.

As I was riding around today an idea struck me...
Use my back brake and try to skid.

So in this case...having a higher gear ratio and being able to skid stop is kinda nice.
