what are you packin'?
what do you all carry with you when you ride?
my list:
1) a tool kit with: tire levers, adjustable wrench, cone wrench, 15mm crescent, a non-ratcheting socket wrench with 15mm and 14mm sockets, allen wrenches, metric and standard, spoke wrench, park glueless patch kit, headset/pedal wrench, maybe a chain tool, definitely a gerber super tool (a recent addition), spare tubes, a pump, and spare brake cables.
2) my journal.
3) water bottle.
4) whatever else happens to be living in my bag (cans/bottles of beer, a hip flask— usually containing scotch—, newspaper/magazine, left over chinese food...sand...a compass, the book i'm currently reading (right now it's the martian chronicles).
all of this is in my Pac 2600cu. in. messenger bag. it used to be a lot worse, believe me...i used to carry a crank puller and multiple sets of pliers and wire cutters...i can't go out on a ride without any of this stuff. i feel like if i leave my bag behind, i'll end up needing something in it. i've used pretty much every tool that i carry with me at least once.
the only time i go sans tools is on a bmx or trials excursion. i used to ride with a kid who carried every tool i have listed and then some in a hipsack on every ride. he'd even carry spare chain links for every possible chain someone could have on their BMX...and headset spacers, and spare axle nuts, and spare crank hardware, and brake hardware, and damn near everything.
so what the hell do you have in your bag!?

I guess thats one of the great things about living in the city, you are always near public transportation. If something happens, jump on a train or a bus.
But I still carry a spare tube, pump, tire levers, adjustable wrench, a set of allen wrenches, cellphone and always an el card, for the train.

oh yeah..i forgot to mention my mini u-lock...i don't really count it because i just put it in my back pocket...to me it's like my helmet or something...it just always goes in my pocket. it'd be like saying that i also carry two pens and some change in my pockets.
yeah...i realise that i carry a lot of stuff...but it used to be a lot worse...one time i had a spare set of handlebars! i'd let you borrow anything stickerguy, except my beer or my flask!
RAR!

Bikes: Moyer Cycles #1 - A fixie of course.
topeak 'hummer' multi-tool, park mini-chain tool (the one on the multi-tool sucks), spare 5" length of chain, 32/36mm headset wrench, spare tube, two patch kits, topeak roadmorph pump, two blue glow-sticks, spare AAA(2)/AA(3) batteries, extra rear blinky light for friends without, bag-o-change, duct tape around a pencil, a pen, and a spare D....in case I 'lose' the first one that's taped under the seat.
cellphone/keys/wallet of course.
as far as locks go, I either carry a wimpy coiled combo lock in the bag, or I wear the 5' Fahgettaboutit.

Allen wrench set, crescent wrench, spare tube, 4-way screwdriver, tire levers, lock, frame pump-- all this stuff is in my bag which is on my rack 24/7.
I usually also carry layering clothes, jersey gloves to stuff inside my bike gloves, stocking cap, sometimes I throw my thermal underwear or my raingear in there depending on the weather.

Spare tube, tire levers, mini-pump, topeak alien, ipod, a book or two, wool hat, sweater, sharpies/paintpens/ballpoints, journal, phone, kryptocable (sometimes). all in the old zo bag or new chrome bag.
and a u-lock in the back pocket.
edit : oh, and a roll of black e-tape and an almost-gone roll of black gaff tape.
