researching a frame for a friend..

So my friend writes me asking me about this schwinn frame.
https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/bik/725117996.html
it looks nice for a schwinn but when i start digging...
like how i can't find a serial number in the database that matches the one he's listed...
did schwinn make frames with columbus tubing? and how can you tell by "certain style features" what the tubing is made from?
also is it worth 120$?

maybe this is in the wrong forum but he does want to make it into a fg... so i figure'd i'd see if any of us folks in here knew anything about it, mods feel free to move it if it should be in another forum.

I would probably drop $100 on that even if it were a generic brand frame with generic tubing. It's certainly in stunning condition.

Yes, some Schwinn frames were made with Columbus tubing, notably the Paramount and the Madison and probably a host of others. It looks nice to me and a 600 headset is nice but I would prefer it to be $100, then I would consider it.

The real place to ask this is in the Classics and Vintage sub-forum, those guys will tell you everything you will ever need to know about it.

And don't forget, Columbus had many many levels of tubing, some amazing and some unspectacular.

I am by no means an expert on such things, but my guess would be that it's made from Reynolds 531.

I have what I believe is an '87 Schwinn Tempo (stock with Shimano 105 components) and it has a Columbus Tenax sticker on it.

The bike looks like it is in great condition, but the line "but a lot of small paint chips, topcoat deep, revealing a white undercoat" implies that the red coat is new. Would make me wonder if the person painted it because he wanted red or to cover up some rust damage... Just a thought

The red over white doesn't imply that the red is new. The white basecoat brightens the red. I always use a white basecoat under red, orange or yellow. Both the bike and the truck in my avatar have white basecoats.

That frame was discussed on the C&V Forum. The consensus was that it's not a Schwinn, but it's a nice frame and well worth $120 whatever it is.
