Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Front or rear brake

This may be a lame ass question but I'm pretty to biking in the city and I just wanted to see if anyone might have any input. I just got a Specialized Centrum sport and removed the rear brake (I tend to remove as much stuff as possible). I feel pretty comfortable with just the front but is this really safe or should I use just the rear instead? I only have about five miles on this setup and I haven't really been in any hairy situations yet. Anyone have any experience with this setup? My biggest concern is the front wheel kickin' out and tasting that delicious pavement.

Are you riding it fixed or free? If you're riding it fixed then you're perfectly fine. Front brakes create almost all of the stopping power and if you know how to use it you won't go over the bars. If you're riding free I would recommend putting the rear brake back on for safety. You rarely hear of a front brake cable snapping but if it does ever happen at least you have a back up brake.

It happened to me. IMO both brakes is a good idea unless it's fixed.

Yeah, it's a single speed. Sounds like good advice to me. I was just screwing around in the garage and went with the front for the hell of it. I get bored with stuff easily. Definately plenty of stopping power from the front alone but a little sketchy.

I've got coloured rims, and I want to keep my front brake on. Would that mess up the colour of the front brake. Any advice? What should I do?
