Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Man you guys are hilarious! You know what though, you're probably right. There's no good reason at all to commute on a fixed gear. I geuss I'll throw my bike in the trash and fly an airplane to work tomorrow. It just seems easier.

you are commuting loosing power should not matter, and how much power are you loosing?.
For what its worth i ride with gr-9's and allstars but would recommend something a little sturdier on top, skidding and allstars don't mix well.

[QUOTE=dobber;6936816]I like the new MKS Grip King

If your riding that kind of distance on your bike, track pedals aren't the best option. You need more platform, something like the aforementioned Gr-9

[/QUOT

How is the ground clearance with Grip Kings? I'm looking for a platform type pedal for my fixed gear bike.
I saw those on the Rivendell site and I thought they would be perfect. I run 170mm cranks on my bike.

You are completely missing the point. Commuting on a fixed-gear is fine. Using clips and straps is fine.

What is confusing is that you listed clips and straps as a reason for riding a fixed-gear (among others). This is confusing because it is entirely possible to use clips and straps on a road bike (and clipless on a fixed-gear). The fact that you seem to associate clips and straps with a fixed-gear and only with a fixed-gear is the source of our derision.

Aren't you kind of killing the point of riding fixed with platform pedals? If you do you can't pull all the way through your spin or resist as much when you need to slow down. You might as well ride single speed and invest in good brakes.

no. There a lot of people on this board who ride with platform pedals. I like the MKS gr-9, which have been mentioned before. The are a platform pedal designed to be used with clips and straps and soft soled shoes. And there great for those who don't want to go clipless.

ground clearance is not an issue with em cuz while they are wide front to back, they are not wide side to side.

grip king + chaco sandles works well for me. i like the rigidity of the vibram sole w/ these pedals. if u wanna look really cool, you'll wear socks with the sandles.

here's a close up of mine:

The grip king he's asking about wasn't designed to use clips/straps. So unless you plan to modify some grip kings, you'll be without foot retention.

Just a quick noob question...
What is it about the GR-9's that makes them so good for riding with softer soled shoes?
I bought some and my room-mate asked me why they're better and i said "i don't know - it's just what i read" so i'd like a better answer for next time. Thanks

GR-9's have actual platforms which spreads the pressure on your foot over the pedal and not just over the cages like on a sylvan. So you can wear soft soled shoes and not have the pedal dig into your feet.

this is why i will be ordering some soon, i got the sylvan lites because they looked smaller decreasing the risk of pedal strike and minimizing pedal overlap but the back of the pedal digs into my tigers, they have a pretty dense sole but it would be nice for the foot to feel well supported especially taking off from a light or climbing
