Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

New fix pics

Here is a pic of a bike that I just got back from the builder. It started out life in the 1970's as a Panasonic touring frame. It ended up in a dumpster where I found and rescued it. I had my local builder change the rear drop outs to Stainless Steel track ends, Paint it and line the lugs and then I added all the components. Phil Wood s/s bb and 32 h/f hole hubs. Mavic open pro rims. Shimano 165mm cranks and nitto bars and stem.Chris King headset and Brooks Pro saddle and American Classic seatpost. Campy pedals and clips. the geometry is rather relaxed as evidenced by the space between the rear wheel and the seat tube. This makes for an easy riding bike without the twitchy nature of a true track Bike. It is fun to rescue an older, but well made frame, from oblivion and return it to a new life. The newer frames of aluminum or other wonder materials just can't compare with a clasic steel lugged steel frame. IMHO.

I've been searching for a decent Panasonic bike for sometime. Pretty nice.

lug closeups

By popular request here are the closeups of the track ends and the lugs. The headset shown on the last Jpeg is not the one that will be on the bike permanently. It was one that I had and threw on so that I could test ride the bike. The Chris King is enroute from Licktons and should arrive next week. The guy that has done all the torch work on my bikes is Jack at Franklin Frames here in Central Ohio. He has been at it for about 25 years and is very good and reasonable in his pricing.
His website is

give him a look.
