Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? stupid noob question

so, im new to all this. i got a trek soho s several weeks ago and now that i am getting more comfortable riding in traffic and such i am interested in changing some things around. i am mainly interested in switching out the factory handlebars for some bullhorns. my question is: do i really have to switch the stem or is the stock one adequate? as far as brakes go, will the stock ones just screw back on to the bars, or do i need to replace the levers? also, is it a matter of aesthetics or function? is this something i can do in the basement with average mechanical knowledge or should i go to a shop to get it done?

thanks for the help

I would go to your local shop and talk with the people there. just ride it to the shop show them what you got and they will be able to guide you, if they are decent people, if not go to a different shop.......buy the stuff and if need be a couple of allen keys and figure it out. this is a very simple task and once you start tearing the bars off you will have realized
a) how easy it is
b) how to put it back together
Cheers!

I also have a Soho S and have considered something similar, but I'm not sure if the layout of the bike (very upright) is conducive to bullhorns....

...but I'm also a bit of n00b so maybe someone else can comment?
