Truvativ Touro = the SUCK!

Here is my story.

I have been riding some of my friend's fixed bikes for a while, but I just recently decided to buy my own bike. Someone I know was selling their barely ridden 07 KHS Flite 100 for $400, so I decided to take it off of their hands. I have been riding this bike for about 2 weeks, and last night while I was riding I felt the left pedal slant downwards a little. I started to slow down, because it felt like it was about to fall of. As I was slowing down, the pedal came right out of the crank arm. Upon inspection, I found that the pedal stripped completely out of the crank. I was literally peeling the threading of the arms off of my pedals! WTF?!?

Maybe it was the pedals? I don't think so though...

Anyone know where I can buy a replacement crank arm?

If this isn't possible, I am looking in to buying a completely new cranks set, so I need your help on deciding what to buy. The IRO cranks seem like a good deal for the price..

I need a fairly cheap, quick replacement, so any suggestions are needed.

Thanks
Rob

I've been riding my Truvativ Touro cranks for a year and haven't had a problem. They aren't the greatest cranks in the world, but I doubt what you experienced is common behavior.

I don't know where you could buy just one crank arm. Maybe eBay, or from someone on BF that has a spare one from an upgrade or something just kicking around.

I haven't heard anything bad about the IRO crankset. Generally people seem to really love their IRO stuff.

www.alienbikes.com has a 144 bcd crankset for $84 plus shipping. I think its the same crank as the iro but in 144.

or just buy a shimano 600 or some similar road double. I have a shimano 105 and it works great.

The pedal probably wasn't installed right. If it's not threaded in all the way, or cross threaded when installed, it could strip out. Maybe or maybe not, the seller knew about it. There's a reason bikes lose about $100 in value when you take them out of the shop door. You've got no warranty.

yeah it may have been overtorqued or somehow stripped on install.

get kazane cranks, i love mine.

Where did you order them?

It looks like Keirin Culture is out of stock... (except for green and purple)

cc700 07-13-08 09:01 PM

they are the only place to get them afaik.

andrewro 07-13-08 09:48 PM

I'm looking at cranks too, after cracking one of my beloved Toplines.
The Kazane looks just like the Andel / Alien / Soma crank, but with colors. The Alien version is least expensive.

Can anyone verify this?

well whether or not they are from the same manufacturer, they might as well be.

Oh BS! Mine is neither heavy nor has any chain line issues. Where do you come up with this crap?

comptechgsr 07-14-08 12:15 AM

they arent the best, but i dont think they're that ghetto-fab.

i am nearing 3000 miles on mine. on my stock mercier (well added a brake and changed a front wheel).

maybe they were installed incorrectly

dddave 07-14-08 02:39 AM

i put 2998 miles on my touros without any problems. no complaints here, sounds like the pedal was installed wrong.

Check their shipping. I was going to buy a set until I found out they wanted $20 to ship it.

I've just recently switched to sugino rd's.. love them. Not that my touro's were bad or broke, just wanted to change my color scheme

What do you mean by that?

Turbo Rob 07-14-08 06:46 PM

Here is the deal. In September, I am leaving to go to Europe for 3 months. I shouldn't have spent my money on this bike to begin with. Now, I am stuck with a bike with a stripped crank. I need a the cheapest yet decent cranks possible.

Ok, so, I haven't heard anything bad about the IRO crankset from anyone other than operator. But he seems to diss on just about everything, so take that with a grain of salt.

iansmash 07-14-08 06:56 PM

Yeah definitely sounds like an improperly installed pedal

I just picked up a sugino messenger crankset that I really like

Turbo Rob 07-14-08 07:46 PM

How can a pedal be installed improperly... just curious.

Crossthreaded. Not greased. Not properly tightened down. Filth and sand on the threads.

Pbeaters 07-14-08 08:40 PM

I have an apex something . But I was making a turn the other day and scraped pretty hard on a turn and now I have a wobble on my left crank arm . It's dented !! it's no longer a square shape

kevbo 07-14-08 09:44 PM

+1 on hamfisted mechaniking and not a problem with the part's manufacture or materials. Omitted as a cause above is someone not realizing that the reason they needed a cheater pipe to loosen the left pedal is that they are left hand thread...also makes them easy to cross thread, because threadstarting skill is weak when working backward. If you call a few bike shops, you can probably find one that has the tools and will repair (helicoil) the crank for you. If it is the right crank NAPA will sell you a kit to fix it, but it is usually the left for the reason above (or maybe) and only bike shops will have the LH thread helicoil and special tap.

ETA:Some "purists" will object to helicoiling. In many industrial and aerospace applications it is preferred and may be required by mil specs etc. I would have no problem letting a loved one fly on an aircraft where a stripped thread was repaired with a helicoil, and for a crank on bike, I wouldn't waste any time worrying over it.

they are, they're just finished differently. the kazane get relatively nice anodizing coats... the colors aren't perfect but they look much better than the andels.
