Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

So it can be converted? I don't want to feel like I'm being ripped off since I don't know much about prices. What's a good price to pay for it. Thank you.

A friend told me that it needs to have horizontal dropouts in order for me to be able to convert it to SS. Honestly, I don't know much about that since I am new to biking, so I hope it all works out.

No it needs to have horizontal dropouts to be converted to fixed gear. It can be single speed with vertical dropouts and a chain tensioner. That should make a good candidate but if it were me i would run that as is. It looks like it could be very nice ride as is.
go over to sheldon browns website. That is a good place to start.

Buy an Iro HD, this can be your geared bike.

I got it for $125 off of craigslist. This is my first bike in a long time so I'm super excited about it. I want a SS, but maybe I'll just leave it as is and buy another one.

the frame won't be too clean for a fixed gear with the braze ons and the downtube shifters.. If you want a geared bike, I'd keep that as your geared bike, but it's your call.
good luck.

To be honest with you I don't know what "he frame won't be too clean for a fixed gear with the braze ons and the downtube shifters" means. I'm so new at this. I'm really just trying to take any advice I can take from this forum. Everything I'm learning I'm learning it from here and I appreciate any advice or suggestions I get from here.

braze-ons are the extra pieces of metal that are attached to the frames tubes that may go unused once you are no longer in need of the derailleur/shifter cables and rear brake cable. They'll just look like unnecessary bumps on the frame.

I wouldn't want that. I may keep it as is.

There's nothing wrong with braze-ons for water-bottle cages, nor the braze-on for the shifters on the downtube. Some people may use the braze-ons for cages to hold their water bottles, but the braze-on that held the shift levers won't be used and some people on here feel that they take away the clean look of the frame. Most fix-geared riders on here don't use their rear brake so the brake cable stops (along the top tube) sit empty, which also is clutter on the frame. Some fixed-gear people ignore these braze-ons while others have them ground off.

The bike seems like it would be a decent classic geared bike, but you certainly can chose to convert it to fixed-gear. It looks like it has a horizontal drop out, which is preferred because it allows you to move the back wheel forward or backward in order to adjust the tension on the chain (which would otherwise be self-adjusted via a spring tensioner on a multi-geared derailure).

I am converting my old Univega bike; I am keeping the braze-ons for the water-bottle cages but had a local machinist grounded off the braze-on that once held the shift levers and those for the brake cables. This makes the frame cleaner looking and is entirely aesthetic.

"top handle thingy to seatpost 55.88 cm..." -picasa lol

You will def need to get a shorter stem and a nice classic looking silver drop bar.
