Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: none!

brand spanking new.

Hey.

well here you have it. I'm brand spankin new to biking as well as the FG world. I've been road biking for a while now and work in a shop. However, what I really want to do right now is build up a fixie.

This being said I went out to a used bike store and picked up a Schwinn Le Tour Luxe for about 40 bucks. It's got the fork. But now I'm trying to figure out what else it is I'm going to need.

I know I will need a crank, bottom bracket since it's rusted out. a new head set. stem, handle bars, wheels, and seat post along with pedals with toe clips and straps.

I got the hang of riding it today in the store I work in. But I can get better obviously. I had hopes of building this up as a beater bike but also something that I can 1. custom paint myself, 2. learn all about the mechanics of a bike 3. say that I built it and know all about it.

Where should I begin?
I'm familiar with Sheldon Brown's site. But know I'm trying to figure out how to go about the next steps.

paint it before anything, if you insist on painting it yourself rather than powdercoating.
