I just sold my red anodized ones today ($100 on CL) and I'm replacing them with a set of white ones. For the price, you just can't beat them. After a year or so of good riding they were still true and spin forever with the sealed hubs. Yes, they are heavy, but my fixed gear is my jonzin' bike.

Still weighing in at 20lbs with those wheels and a steel frame ain't that bad.

I'm thinking of getting a set of deep Vs soon. Honestly, what is the weight difference between Weinmanns and Velocities...are they really that much heavier? I just do normal everyday riding but the roads here suck and I'm looking for something a little more solid than what I've got now.

There's no reason to be concerned with the weight, especially for the type of riding you do.

That's exactly what I thought, Dion. With so many people using DP-18s, they can't be that bad, right? I'm not overly concerned with weight but am opposed to making my Kilo a tank 'cause at the end of each day, I've got to lug my bike up four flights of stairs.

I've had both and there isn't a significant difference in weight. Not enough to make your 4 flight hike any worse. Maybe weight weenies has exact weight for you: https://weightweenies.starbike.com/

I think when people make comments about DP18s being heavy, they mean that Deep V rims in general are heavy. Velocity rims are probably just as heavy. I don't think the DP18 are any heavier than the Velocity.

The only difference b/w them as far as I can tell is how they are put together. Velocity uses a few extra steps at the seal (not sure exactly what those steps are), wherease Weinmann just uses one step. That said, I haven't heard of any cases where the Weinmanns split, so I wouldn't worry about it.

They are good rims, and Formula hubs are really great. Formula hubs are better than a lot of the hubs I have had on my road bike.

Get a machined set, that way you can install and use a brake without it looking ghetto and rubbing the anodized finish.

My old pair only had the front machined and the new pair I ordered is machined front and back.

I want to say, too, that the Deep V's somehow "ride better" - meaning they just "feel" better. I don't know if it's in my head, but the solid, stiff wheels are very nice.

I feel this same way and have often wondered if it was in my head or for real. Anyone else want to comment?

Weinmann DP-18 - 1239g
Velocity Deep V's - 1182g
Both REAR wheels were built with identical hub and spoke set ups. I didn't think to weigh them untill after I already had the front tire on. Didn't really feel like pulling it apart again.

So yeah, a whole 57 grams...

Finally, we can lay this tiring question to rest.

There we have it. Weight difference is small. I've had both, and no real problems with either.

What if someone were to upgrade to lighter wheels but still relatively spend about the same amount as a set of Weinmann's with formula hubs. What wheel selection would that person be looking into?
