I think 11201ny very shrewdly turned this thread into a flame war so that it would continuously get bumped, thus increasing the chances of recovering his bike.

Well played, sir.

I've only gone through the first few pages to this thread, but did OP mention what lock he was using? And anyone know if a thief has to cut through both sides of the U-Lock to free the bike, or is just one side enough enough to slide the frame through?

shubonker 07-24-08 09:08 PM

No lock is safe... here's a kryptonite fuggetdaboutit chain being cut within 20 seconds

All people asked for was information on how it was locked up, as YOU were giving a ****ing roundabout on what was going on. People ask questions for many reasons, one big one being a way to not have their own lock(s) defeated by a would be thief. Stop being suck a ****, the hate only started after you were a ******bag.

Good luck getting your bike back, I cringe at even thinking of losing my Samson.

yes, the original poster eventually offered up the info. he claimed to be using two kryptonite evo locks. one long lock frame to a sign post, and another small one locking front wheel to frame. he claims these locks were broken or cut somehow, but has no evidence to support that other than a missing bike.

because of how vague and angry the OP was about the circumstances of the theft (he sent me two private messages harassing me for asking, and this is while i was still asking politely), i think it is reasonable to assume his locks were either not actually used or defeated, and that the rest of us dont need to use this story as a another reason to worry or lose faith in the locks we are using.

stachemaster 07-25-08 11:12 AM

and if the one lock on the pole was popped, and then taken, what evidence would he have? bikes get stolen all the time in nyc. professional thieves are out there, with all kinds of tools to defeat locks. you have little reason to keep faith in those locks - they are a theft deterrent, not infallible device.

he has to be vague since he didn't see the crime committed. and speaking hypothetically, even if he failed to lock properly, he wasnt opening a debate on locking methods, he was merely asking for nyc cyclists to keep an eye out if they saw the bike. sadly, its probably changed hands on the street 3 times by now.

i didnt say i necessarily have faith in the locks, i said this particular story does little to reduce my faith.

this thread has become a joke.

BikeSnob NYC had the scoop on his blog. Apparently Skippy, in his drunken, fatty chasing state, managed to lock the two evos together. Unfortunately, neither lock secured the bike.
