Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Converting my Ross singlespeed

I have an old singlespeed coaster-brake Ross Eurotour. I know nothing about bike mechanics, but want to learn by converting my Eurotour. I want the bike to be as simple and frugally built as possible - I have no need for a flipflop hub and would like to convert the bike well with minimal spending. This bike is my eventual commuter beater. I will need a front brake. Due to sentimental value I'm not considering another bike. It will see predominantly flat road, so I'd also like to swap out the thick 26" cruiser tires for a more efficient setup.

I started browsing the links and doing searches here but the knowledge is overwhelming. Please help me get started.

It sounds like it might make more sense to just use it as is. Maybe get the tires you want.

Otherwise you're going to need a new wheelset.

you may be able to receive additional relevant advice and tips by posting detailed photos of your bike, which could allow others to see what options are available.
