This **** is just illegible. I'm not saying owning a bike shop requires a tremendous amount of intelligence, but could you maybe not type like a 14-year-old's myspace page?

fluidworks 08-30-08 10:56 PM

Maybe it's just me, but this person doesn't come off as a bike shop owner anyways.

tmh657 08-30-08 10:58 PM

nikitina, did you use the clone tool to remove the tin can or what ever was holding up the bike?

I mean, the bike has beefy ass welds on it, so maybe the roughness of the stem works. oh, prolly not. who cares. it's comfy :)

This looks disturbing.

Anything under 50cm is probably a BMX stem. No rise but indestructible. You have your work cut out for you finding a 1 1/8th stem/bar combo that works. If you like risers, BMX bars (22 or somethhing mm clamp size) might be ok - better on a smaller frame.

I have the Eastern Decepticon Stem and the DMR Wing Bar on my mountain bike...

not my bike. i say 'no' to risers. but yeah, the guy that took that photo likely did that in PS.

actually I'm not sure about this. There is no question that putting a short stem on a road or xc bike is a ****ing disaster. It's not twitchy like a steeper headtube, higher rake, or more weight over the front wheel it's twitchy in a different and completely unpleasant way. However I've never used swepted back bars on such a bike instead and intuitively can't see why it would be any better.

Really though if the op actually owns a shop it must be an incredibly ****ty one. He seems to care more about how a short stem is going to look than anything else and apparently doesn't even have a single one stocked to test out for himself nor is he willing to hazard a few bucks for one he could easily just sell if it didn't work out.

Depends on the frame and bar type, IMO. On a longer frame and stretched out on bullhorns id be fine. And don't they put really steep short reach stems (those adjustable ones too) on comfort and recreational bikes?

Those things have kickstands.. they stay up by themselves.

I actually ride one of those 'comfort/recreational' bikes for bigger food delivery loads on my job right now. Company supplied the bike so I can't complain much, and smaller loads get put on the KHS track (the KHS is a little too light for heavy loads and if you're not straddling the top tube, the bike will wheelie itself and fall over). Anyways, the stem shoots almost directly straight up and the handling is absolutely awful on it - one of the worst handling bikes I can ever remember riding. I think it's a combination of the head tube being slack and the stem not going forward at all, it's twitchy in a very unpleasant way like dutret said... doesn't help one go through traffic at all.

neverjared 08-31-08 01:41 PM

I ran 50mm stem on my 53 cm swobo and it worked great for riding around town and felt real stable. I think as Dutret said, there are a number of factors that contribute to the feel of the bike.

Right now I'm riding a 90mm Deda Zero100 on my 51 Concept. I love this stem!

jerseybmx 08-31-08 02:40 PM
