pic request... short stems

ok my bike has a 120mm stem with a 5 degree rise

i want to go shorter... but how short is too short??

i want an upright feel (i'm already running 2" risers) as this is my beater bike and i just use it for cruising around the boardwalk

i'll be running a thompson stem... 25.4 clamp

onetwentyeight 08-30-08 10:25 AM

proper fit depends on lots of things. that been said, I would not go below 80cm as the shorter the stem gets, the twitchier the handling.

sp00ki 08-30-08 10:30 AM

my gf rides a 50 on her tarck bike. she says the twitchiness helps in traffic. i also have a 50 on my grocery bike. the geo is different (soho s), but it's still great.
it will be twitchier, but not terrible. the bicycle's trail will still remain in tact, so the responsiveness of the ride will be unchanged; however, it will be more sensitive to what you do with your hands.

i like twichy... i have a 48 on my bmx with a 25mm rake fork.. fun

i think my fork rack is 45?? so anything longer wont be so bad

i know how to properly fit... i run a bike shop.. i fix and fit for a living. i just dont wanna throw on a 50mm and have it look like @$$

You run a bike shop? Grab a short stem off the shelf and put it on your bike.

doubled 08-30-08 10:58 AM

what shop?

iansmash 08-30-08 11:03 AM

if you run a bike shop, why is this even a question??

I wouldn't go below 80mm personally, and not 90mm ideally. You go too short and it's just bad news for handling IMO.

From your user name I'm guessing you do tricks more than actual riding around the city. But if you ride around the city and want a more upright position, I'd suggest keeping your stem and getting some "Priest" bars or 3 speed cruiser bars. Personally I think one should just man up and learn how to ride bullhorns or track drops in the city (which is perfectly do-able if you don't have a ridiculous saddle-to-bar drop and actually use the drops).

 exactly what I thought. Perhaps its strictly a BMX shop and he doesn't know much about road/track bikes but even then you should know what a shorter stem does to handling.

ok, on topic, I have an insanely short stem on my bike, with some rise, I'll go see if I can find the specs on it, but as far as ridability... I went from a 130 to what I have now. I'm not sure what "twitchy" means, but the steering seems less responsive. I can't just move my arms slightly anymore to guide the bike. but, on the positive, I don't feel like magilla gorilla riding the bike anymore.

oh, ok, here's the stem.

it's ugly as all hell, even on the bike. i dont care at all though, it's made my bike so much more comfortable to ride... worth it.

Bar Clamp Diameter: 25.4 mm
Steerer Tube: 1-1/8" Threadless

you obviously didnt read my post. it's basically a beach cruiser to me. i dont live in a city.. although i do ride philyl a lot, but when i do it's for bmx street riding

andre nickatina 08-30-08 12:17 PM

just get cruiser bars dude.

str8flexed 08-30-08 12:21 PM

i went from 90 to 70mm and it feels fine. doesn't feel "twitchy", maybe slightly more responsive, but i dont see the big deal about it.

Maverick PHX 08-30-08 12:34 PM

... in the spirit of pic request:

I mean, the bike has beefy ass welds on it, so maybe the roughness of the stem works. oh, prolly not. who cares. it's comfy :)

the pics above are of a 31.8.
If you ride risers (going on a limb and assuming you do), there are tons of options in the downhill world.
there are even 31.8 drops.

i already have the risers... i like the simple look of 25.4... never liked the fat bar thing. i knwo it clamps better, and if i had carbon bars they would be 31.8 for strength purposes.

and i have a thompson fetish

it's the internet, get over it. and i don't see how you find me saying cruiser bars would work well for what you want being an ******* comment. the bike will handle far better with the same stem and bars that come closer vs. a super short stem and risers. it's just general info, i'm sure even dutret would agree.

oh, and picture:

super sick bmx tarck bike.
