The downfall of tark (or bicycle events in general) are the clothing. Until someone figures out how to make aerodynamic clothing that looks cool then it will never be truly big.
But you are right, size is the biggest difference when it comes to short vs long distance events. Chris hoy is 6'1 200lb, the latest winner of the tour, Carlos Sastre, was 5'8 130lb.

I never said anything about long vs. short distance. There are plenty of big long distance cyclists, Thor Hushovd for example. I was just pointing out the fallacy of your "real athletes" statement. The best climbers are scrawny little guys but that doesn't mean they aren't real athletes or they don't work out just as hard as a bulked up sprinter.

I'll admit lycra looks funny if you're skin and bones, pale and hairy. Get tanned, bulked up and shaven and you're sure to pull in the ladies (and maybe the peloton).
