Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Hide your bike. They can't steal it if they can't see it. Also deters vandalism whereas a lock can not.

I'd rather have it in the most well lit, most visible spot I can find. Despite the bike theft video, the more likely people are to see what a thief is doing, the more likely that thief is going to go find a more out of the way bike.

+1.

Think about it. Is a thief going to put all the effort into yours when there are a bunch of bikes that are hooked up with only weak cables. Plus, thieves might not know about the bike thief video, and they might want to be as discreet as possible, so why not just take the bike with only a cable?

My university is a prime example of this.

Actually, most university bike thefts at my school take place during lunch, when people pull up to the servery and freelock their bike with a U or cable lock. It just gets picked up and carried away, end of story.

i usually use the big new york U and the evo mini. front and frame to an object with the bigger lock, rear to the frame with the smaller. i think i'm going to get a chain soon though just because it give your more options, and honestly i think it looks scarier to someone armed with only a hacksaw. i don't think i would ever use a cable lock to secure anything aside from maybe a seat, they're like 1 snip with some decent bolt cutters. the scary thing is that now people are starting to just cut straight through your frame, then re-weld and paint and sell it to a customer who is not only getting a stolen bike, but also a very unsafe one.
