You need some way to tension the chain. Easiest way is to use the current rear derailleur as a tensioner.

SS chain tensioners are pretty cheap and will replace the derailleur. Depending on what type of hub you have, you could pull the extra gears off and replace with spacers (most likely have this style), or if it is a threaded hub (older style) you can replace the whole gear cluster with a bmx freewheel.
