After finishing my MTB convert to SS, I purchased the following offer eBay via best offer. This will be my first attempt at a ground up build and my first fixie. I am excited and I hope I don't muff things up.

I am going for an all black theme with a polished King headset and clear grips on risers. Going to have the wife get me custom rims from Monkey Cycle out of Oakland for Xmas with a trippy spoke pattern.

Well, I got my email reply back from Monkey about the approx. cost of the wheelset I described and it is out of my price range for this project.

Go to Ben's cycle. You can get a hand built wheelset with parts they supply starting around $200 a set.

I got some parts finally from the folks at Bike Biz. I decided to not spend as much money on this project as originally had planned since this is my first FG/SS.

So far I have FSA Orbit headset, basic Sugino TH7420 bb and black Messenger crankset.

Still don't know what I am going to do for stem, bars and wheels. As far as the wheels go, I want all black with the exception of the front wheel braking surface.

Why did you go with FSA instead of king?

Basically the cost. Hopefully the old saying "you get what you pay for" does not apply. I was told it was a decent entry level headset.

I really liked my friend's Concept that he let me borrow while he was out of town. I can't afford buying a bike like his, so I thought I would give it a shot at the "entry level" building it myself instead of one out of the box.

I would go cheap or used for the rest of the parts to see how you like it. Let me know if you need hand with anything, I'm local.

FSA is solid. King is better, but that fsa will do you right.

How about these wheel sets from eBay? I am more partial to the all black with machined braking surface.

Thanks for the post dougland89. When you buy wheels like this, do they come ready to ride or will they need truing?

I like the look of the Weinmann's but they do have a reputation of splitting... but I think you'd have to really pound on them to wreck em.
I would check out the mavic's as dougland said. And formula hubs (as long as you aren't riding SUPER hard) should do just fine.
Usually they are relatively true but if you order any wheels online you should at least have your LBS check them out first.

Sounds fun. Don't let people dog on you because you don't have a name brand frame. There is nothing wrong with 4130. And a $150 frame with nice components will probably ride better than a $600 frame with crap on it.

It will be hard to get a wheelset "off the shelf" with a non-machined rear, and machined rear. IRO could probably do it, or you could buy the pieces yourself and build them up yourself.

Serious question, do either of you (or anyone else) have any real experiance with this issue? I am yet to hear a single first hand story or even see a picture of a failed DP18.
I run one on the rear of my conversion and have had no problems.

ive had my dp18's for about 5 months now and no problems sofar. i guess you have to be doing some really stupid stuff to really break these things.

good lookin' set of parts so far! definitely keep an eye on Craigslist if you're building an entry-level starter bike. If you choose wisely you can save a lot of money.

and not to derail the thread further but i agree with the "pics or GTFO" comment on the Weinmanns. This stupid "splitting" story comes up over and over again on this forum, yet i have never seen any evidence at all. i don't own a set and i don't have any reason to defend Weinmann, but it's really annoying to see a baseless rumor continued to be propagated just so people can sound like they know more about bikes than they actually do.

It's on! I have everything except front brake, bars and grips. I am going to start assembly today. Going to take my time so I don't fark anything up.
