Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Screaming steel death trap?

New cog, barely getting in the dropouts there. Opinions on whether or not this will be a problem? (Must I lengthen the chain)

I'd only let a person I know ride that bike if I didn't like that person very much.

You need a tool call a chain breaker. You push the pin most of the way (BUT NOT ALL THE WAY!!!!) out of the chain, add in a couple links (it looks like you only need two), and push the pin back in. Probably on Youtube or Sheldon Brown.

this would be a good opportunity to get a chain that wasn't red.

Yeah I agree I have long since realized the poor choices I made when originally building my bike. Im hopefully building a new one around november though and am trying to not buy more parts to the best of my abilities.

I think it's probably fine as long as you make sure that bolt is really tight. In any case, it probably took more effort to take the pic, upload it and post it here than it would have to just lengthen the chain ;-)

Im unfortunately not the kind of person who has a chain tool and spare links laying around and I dont live in the kind of city that has bike stores open at 10 oclock. : D

Iv ridden it a few times since getting the cog, but it certainly wouldnt hurt to lengthen it some and be safer. Ill look into it tomorrow after class.

just buy a new chain, adding links to fixed chains (especially if you dont have brakes and you live in a hilly city) is always a scarry idea for me. a pc1 is a great chain and its like 10 bucks from a chain bike shoppe

As long as the whole surface of the track nuts are biting steel it will be fine.

wow this guy bugs me, first he sees a picture of some bullhorns and calls them un-rideable, when they are completely fine. and then he posts this picture. wow.

ignore the people freaking out, it looks to me like the nuts aren't floating in the air at all. despite the fact that it's ugly and looks like you have a death wish, it should be okay.
