Cotter pins for BB

I have a french fixie that i built this summer and i am in search of some cotter pins that attach the pedals to the bottom bracket. Does anyone know where i could get some QUALITY ones? The LBS i have been going to is inadequate. I am out at Penn State for a while. Thanks

via bicycle in philly probably has what you need, but you'd really be better off with a modern crankset.

Do a search for cotter at loosescrews.com - they carry 9mm and 9.5mm.

All the more power to ya... I have a french-threaded peugeot w/ cottered cranks that I finally replaced with a square taper spindle.... soo much easier to work with.

Bikes: Currently just an old GT Tequesta MTB, but just rebuilt from the ground up as a single speed and love it! Next project is a road fixie, looking for a donor....

You can get them at https://www.thethirdhand.com for about $1.00. Lots of small parts there too! Good place, used them for years.

can you give me more info on your square taper spindles? Such as where you got them and how much they cost?

A good road double (reduced to a single) can be used with a square taper spindle... you will need a number 5 spindle to replace the cottered one and this can be done as long as your bearing cups are in good condition.

A new spindle costs about $7.00 and most good shops should be able to get them if they don't stock them.

i've never found a shop that stocks them. I got a spindle on ebay, it is a TA 344. However, it's actually too long (even though it's supposedly equivalent to a 5 series). It works, but the adjustable cup doesn't thread in as far as it should and there are some exposed threads... makes me nervous.

Do a search on sheldon's site for more info about using 5-series square-taper spindles with french bottom brackets

Seeing as how cottered cranks are "old", you might check with the Vintage forum if you can't find something to suit you.

I believe Yellow Jersey stocks these, and Harris Cyclery probably does, as two other choices. Be sure to read up Sheldon Brown's article on them if you haven't.

+1 to that. While lots of "upgrades" are over-rated, getting away from cotters can make your life a lot easier if you're not wedded to the cranks. Also keep in mind that good, used road doubles go for cheap.
