Historical Fixed Gear Reading
I thought I would share some titles of books that pertain to fixed gear riding that I have in my personal library.
1. The first and favorite one that I have read and re-read numerous times is:
The Wonderful Ride by George T. Loher ISNN 0-06-250540-8
This is the tale of a young man who sets out from Oakland California to ride to the N.Y.C to visit the Fair that was being held there in 1895. Most of the ride was conducted on unpaved roads and railroad right-of-way. The struggles he went through are monumental and he kept a great outlook throughout the whole adventure.
2. The second book is: Two Wheels North By Evelyn McDaniel Gibb
ISBN 0-87071-485-6
The story of two boys fresh out of high school who ride up the Pacific Coast from Santa Rosa Calif. to Seattle Washington in 1906. Along the way they have some interesting adventures and grow up in the process.
3. The third one is: Around the World Awheel by Brian Kinsman
ISBN 0-88999-544-3 This is the true story of the first Canadian to bicycle around the world in 1902. Great adventure story of the trials and tribulations of fixed gear riding at the turn of the last century.
4. The fourth one of note is about Track Racing. Major Taylor by Andrew Richie ISBN 0-8018-5303-6 This is the life story of the first Black American Track Racing Superstar at the turn of the 19th century and his struggles and triumphs. He was the equivalent of the Michael Jordan of his day. The highest paid sports star and all around interesting fellow.
These are some of the books that I have collected pertaining to Fixed Gear riding that paint a picture of what it was like when Fixed Gear riding was new and the bike was king. It is wonderful to see how these ordinary people used a bicycle to achieve greatness and do it on very little money and with style and class. I am sure there are other books about the same subject matter and I would appreciate hearing the names of them if you know of any. All of the mentioned books are Reprints of the originals that should be currently available from Amazon.com or your local bookseller via special order. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I also have a number of books about the High Wheel Bicycle in a slightly earlier time period but I thought these above would be of interest to this group.
