Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I am starting to wonder about that also. I think that it all comes down to whether you run really massive gears and power up hills all day. If you treat your knees with a little respect, and run sensible gears on the hills, there is no problem. I used to have terrible knees before I started riding fixed gear and they are stronger now than ever at 62 years old. Just my experience.

I think pushing a big gear in a velodrome vs the street is a different experience for your knees. I don't see much skid stopping in a velodrome, a lot of them don't even run lock rings.
The wear and tear on knees depends more on riding style more than anything. Slamming on the 'brakes' while flying with a big gear day after day can't be real good. But you can wreck your knees pushing a big gear on a traditional road bike.

Basketball and running effed up my knees. Surgery made 'em even worse in my opinion. Now, I predominantly ride and play ice hockey and on most days my knees are pain free. 45x16 with 170mm cranks and no complaints.

Oh yeah, I'm 35...my knees at times feel twice that old.

Well, if you'd lay off the yoga after riding in from starbucks on your coaster.. you'd probably be ok.

No yoga or Starbucks in my neighborhood. However, if you're looking for a new weave, Colt 45 Tallboy singles, and some wings, NE DC is your place.

Whadda you think? Actually, after completing an unscientific survey consisting of empties found outside my house, I would say that Steel Reserve is the brew of choice in my 'hood. I'm sure I'm tsk-tsk'd on recycling day when my neighbors see the Bass Ale bottles in the bin.

I don't think they exactly say tsk-tsk.

but, the poll - "17-24" come on! That includes two major milestones! 18 and 21... that's a big range... should be 0-17, 18-20, 21-30, 30-49, 50+

0-17: Can't drink, smoke, gamble or enjoy most constitutional protections
18-20: Can smoke, gamble and get drafted
21-30: Now you can self-medicate, ERRR, legally drink.
30-49: Can't be trusted anymore.
50+: Sage
and 30-49 isn't a HUGE spread there! scuse you sweetums but i do not like being lumped in the same category as my mother! (ok well not quite same catagory as mom but REALLY close! like too close for comfort.)

and i don't see how it is i can't be trusted anymore... when did this happen! i didn't ASK for another birthday. i didn't ASK for another candle to be added to that silly cake i so wished for last year to not have this year... (and yes that was the wish i had made when i blew the candles out last year, and the year before and the year before that... i despise birthday cake, especially my own.)

ok i think i'll stop b*tch*ng now and vow to never grow up no matter WHAT category i get lumped into!

cheers
kat

5 years older than my newest (to me) bike. I want to get a bike that was born the same month as me. Vintage steel!

I believe it was Andy Warhol that said "Never trust anyone over 30". Of course it could have been someone else. I forget.

Kris Kristopherson, right? My I.D. says I'm 30, I'm not so sure.

Ah yes, those happy memories of my youth are starting to return. Now the big hair fantasies make sense to me.
