ImprezaDrvr-to think that your URBAN CENTER is the same as the URBAN CENTER I currently ride through are the same is a complete stretch of imagination. If I was a 1st grade teacher, you'd get 3 stars: 2 for creativity and 1 for extended imagination. Tell you what: you come to Chicago, I'll pay room and board for you, and you ride around Chicago for two weeks, during rush hour. If it is NO DIFFERENT from what you incur in AZ, I will pay you $500 cash. I'll even give you a receipt so you can claim it on your taxes! I am ready to prove you wrong, can you accept it? |

I choose not to. |
165, the key point of my post was living and riding in Dallas, which some might call a bit of a population center. I'll certainly admit that riding here is cake compared to even a small city. You're exactly right, and I didn't emphasize the point I was trying to make well enough.

I back DV 100%. I have done this to protect myself IN A BIKE LANE. Maybe you could come to Chicago and give a class on how to offer friendly tips on not hitting cyclists to all the PISSED OFF, SUV DRIVING, TAXI CAB ROCKETS, etc here and make it better for us. We'd appreciate it. Sorry about the spelling, you can discredit all I say becuase I misspelled those words |

Are you attempting to ride the middle ground here? |

The reality is that yelling is what works. I've hit 2 cars with my bike pump since 1999 August (when I returned to the United States), that was after yelling and hitting with my hand didn't do anything. I'm not a fan of violence. But simply getting out of the way is cowardice. One VERY BIG son of a @#$@$ actually said thanks when I hit is window: he didn't notice me, and wasn't listening to anything. Take it for what you want. I won't lay down. My way of life is to commute. And don't call me a bike Nazi. BTW, I'm gonna post this PM. Just for you. |

Getting out of the way of a car or truck is not cowardice - Its smart. Its not a life or death situation unless you make it one. There are more important things to fight for and better ways to fight the fight you seem so willing to engage in. I hope you're not one of those URLs in a few years from your description of your actions on the road - sounds like cycling is bad for your health. |

No, I was making a reference to DV's HUGE gear he turns, 52 something. Lotta gear to turn man.. Nothing aimed towards you, I wasn't clear, sorry. |

I certainly hope you're not one of the silent masses that deals with loss of right of way, and just assumes "that's the way it is so I'll live with it". I'm not the crazy CM advocate you think I am. In fact I'm really not sure about CM, and don't agree with some of the things I see. But in a reality based situation, things happen, and degrees of counter measure must be done. |

i think one of the biggest issues for ******* drivers for me is that they CAN and DO get away with being *******s. they can speed by you at 45mph, 5inches from your side and nothing happens to them. they can spit on you at a stop light, then get away when it turns green and nothing happens to them. they can cut you off, cause you to fall and be seriously injured and nothing happens to them.
i've smacked a few mirrors in my time, i've kicked a few doors and headlights too. and you know what? it made me feel GOOOOD...some people need a wake up call. mine came when i was riding with a friend in boston and an AMBULANCE driver swerved into him, he hit the mirror, then she swerved into him AGAIN for no reason. no lights, no sirens, just cruisin' up newbury. well, it escalated, he (my friend) thought her window was up, because she didn't respond after he yelled at her, until he was about three car lenghts in front of her, then she hollered something, i didn't hear it...he came back down the street and hocked up a lugie and spit in her face...which was, uncalled for, but so was her trying to kill him. anyway, this all went down right in front of some Boston transit cops and there was a bike cop who was a few blocks back and was right there on the scene in less than a minute. they took my friend down HARD. then the ambulance driver sat on him with her knee in the back of his neck, screaming her head off right in his ear. yeah, really ****ing civil. he got assault charges and parole, she got nothing. the whole situation really pissed me off, because she got off scot free for operating an emergency vehicle in a dangerous manner. at any rate, i don't do much kicking and punching anymore, which pissed people off, and sometimes got my point across, but i do yell my head off, which does absolutely nothing. if i was in a situation that had escalated to the point where i didn't have an escape route, you bet your ass i'd go down fighting though. i try to live by the rule of "don't start ****, and there won't be ****." problem is, most of the time, i'm not the one starting it, and i still can't do anything about it. sometimes, people need a wake-up call. |
