Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: who cares?

ZooBomb 3 Pepper 0

...and from down the mountain rained a 2 wheeled storm of mythical fury... leaving only smiles in its wake

From the local daily paper:

And the bomb goes on: On Thursday, the Sylvan-Highlands neighborhood board voted against asking TriMet to close the MAX's zoo station early every night.

The 7-5 decision was a victory for Zoobombers, those daredevil bicyclists who rely on light rail to get them into the West Hills for their weekly Sunday night plunge down the steep, dark streets into downtown.

Shutting down the zoo stop at 11 p.m. was neighborhood Officer Jeff Myers' idea. He said it would keep out criminals and the Zoobombers, a group he considers too loud and rowdy.

The Rev. Phil Sano, an ordained minister and regular Zoobomber, says the police should welcome the presence of the two-wheeled speed demons. Their presence on the streets, he says, probably deters car prowlers and burglars.

"We fight evil crime," Sano says. "It's very important to us. It's part of the Zoobomb mantra: We fight crime."

In the end, however, the neighborhood board's vote was less about the Zoobomb and more about an uneasiness with linking crime to mass transit. Still, a good-neighbor agreement might be in the works.

Board President Gretchen Hollands gave a peace offering to the Zoobombers: 40 kazoos. Her hope is the bombers will make a gentle noise rather than screaming as they zoom down the hill.

"It's always easier to ask people to modify their behavior than to change it," she says.

More from Rev. Phil:

"for the record: Meyers proposed a TEN o clock shutdown. 11:00 was a "compromise"

and I don't know if we have a mantra but our unofficial CREEDO goes:

-Fight Evil
-Do not be thwarted
-BOMB!

a mantra is a sacred verbal formula repeated in prayer, meditation, or incantation, such as an invocation of a god, a magic spell, or a syllable or portion of scripture containing mystical potentialities:

zoobombwebombthehillssofastsometimeswecrashsometimeswe'retrashedzoobombwebombthehillssofastsometimes wecrashbutwealwaysgetup

gee, they're almost the same"

More for the record, from randya:

ZooBomb will be celebrating their second anniversary, this September or thereabouts. From the start the Portland Police Department (PPD, or "pepper" in ZB vernacular) have taken a dim view of ZooBomb, simply because they ride bicycles, have fun, and are non-conformists. The first pepper crackdown was an attempt to exclude ZooBombers from the light rail trains. That was rescinded by higher authorities. The second pepper attempt was to confiscate ZooBomb's bike stash, also thwarted. The third pepper attempt was to try and get the neighborhood association to agree to close the train station used by the 'bombers, also thwarted. Other forms of police harassment include excessive police force used to check tickets and verbally harass cyclists on the train, and ticketing of cyclists on the ride for a variety of minor equipment violations, etc.

Anyway, ZooBomb is still alive and well in Portland, one of the best rolling parties on two wheels that I know of!!!

40 kazoos is a lot of kazoos, and certainly will not make a "gentle" noise. they should hold rehearsals and practice songs and stuff. that woman will rue the day she gave zoobomb kazoos.
