Supply and demand.

I've personally weighed a powdercoated Deep V out to 580g, a silver one to 560g, and a Weinnman out to 710g.

580g for a 42mm is excellent. At that depth you have actual aero benefits - this is why I lobbied on the "other forum" for Tzusing to do a tubular version becaues I'd personally build them into track wheels for the aero benefit.

I eyeroll at these rims, because since they're drilled 32 and 36, it seems like they're just intended to be a bigger colored surface to which you can match your toestraps and grips. but andrew nickatina is right, they could be a decent aero rim. I'd see how these perform under other riders for a year or two but keep my eyes open for a 20 or 24h drilling, maybe tubular, for a front wheel. Cheaper than carbon.

why wouldn't you want 32 hole spokes? why opt for 20h?

andre nickatina 10-15-08 02:34 PM

Almost no reason for 32h rim in the front at that depth for racing when you can get more aero benefit from 20 or 24h. On the track a 32h rear could be good though. I'd probably do like a 32h rear, 20 or 24h front if I did it...

MIN 10-15-08 02:42 PM

I'd rather go for stiffness personally so 32h in the rear. 24h for front is probably sufficient, you are right...

I like Deep-V rims because they build up to such a stiff wheel and not necessarily because they are "aero."

andre nickatina 10-15-08 02:44 PM

Meh. Deep V's are radially stiffer, but are they laterally where it matters? Radial stiffness kills ride quality and doesn't really lend to much performance AFAIK...

I feel that Deep-Vs are laterally stiff, but then again I always run 32/32h.

There you have it... and Nikatina is right... a Weinmann is a hair over 700grams

Oh and before anyone points it out... I have my hand on the velocity to tilt it to get the glare off the face of the scale... it still weighed .54 kg without the hand.

And for the record... they are not THAT harsh. I have them laced to chub hubs 3x rear radial front on a Brooklyn frame and they ride about the same as a deep v.

In my mind even a Deep V is too harsh! I'll take Open Pros or Aeroheads myself.

Thanks for clearing up the weight issue with the doubters though. Tzusing needs tubbies already...
