i never touch the brake when i'm trackstanding on my road bike. i pick the gentlest incline in the road - even relying on surface imperfections rather than overall slopes in the road. i lean on the bars a lot, because it makes it easier to roll the cranks back a few degrees when i need to. stay still but be relaxed, practice, let yourself fail, and eventually you'll be able to do it longer and longer.

I also gear down a little bit more than I generally would.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter
Use the road camber to advantage. Position yourself on the side of the road, parallel or turned in slightly to the center of the road. Point the front wheel to your left. Now pedal pressure pushes the bike to the left, and gravi9ty to the right. Once you have it down, practice and in a while you'll be able to find enough pitch to track stand anywhere.
