Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? first post...

building up a bike island frame right now. first time i've built a bike from scratch. thought it would be cheap, boy was i wrong. pretty bummed that i can't get a bike shop around here to extend the threads to run threaded. the length of the steerer on this thing is ridiculous.

i've been riding a overly large '75 sekai conversion for the last 6yrs...great bike with lots of nostalgia (it was my pops when he was in grad school).

i'm worried that the 55cm frame is going to be a bit small for me. standover is good, but i haven't been on it with a stem/bars yet.

as far as the stems go have any of you using shims on the 1" steerer ever had problems? also, what crank/BB combo are you guys running to get close to 42cm? i'm going with the sugino xd crankset and was wondering if it requires a 103 or 107mm bb.

lots of questions. thanks and hello...

Building up a bike is usually way more expensive than buying a complete off the peg bike. But it sure is fun and you learn a lot more about your bike. Also you get to pick and choose every part.

I can't speak for the Sugino XD, I've never run them. Shims are fine for the steerer tube, just purchase a proper shim and don't worry about it.

Good Luck with your build!

Does anyone know if a fork that was once cut to be used threadless can later be threaded to be used with a threaded headset? Or is it like once you go threadless, then the tube can no longer be threaded for some reason...

thanks.

if the threading is gone, threading from scratch is more difficult but not impossible.

It's junk. I think it's an old kalloy or something like that. It's a 26.8, if that's the size you need, I can ship it to you if you pay the shipping.

I was also going to ask that. The drops look too shallow for 123's. Maybe 125's? I could be wrong.

I think I read his post in another thread and he mentioned something about 125's so probably.
