Ok, I'm a n00b. Why do all the SS bikes seem to be 700c and no 26ers?

Because 700c is what everybody else uses.

theres a ton of 26" ss MTB's out there... its popular among the people I know.

Because tall people like me look really stupid on 26" wheels.

technically a beach cruiser would be a 26" SS bike...

because it's likely they (read: I) don't know how to convert them right and end up destroying frames when they (again, read: I) hit a pothole.

My MTB ss is some where in this forum...and because I am little, but so little (lucky little me) that I even have a 26 inch wheel road fixed gear bicycle that I will post in the gallery soon.

i have a brodie unibomber. it's an SS specific mtb frame, with horizontal drops. it's one of my favourite bikes. i used to have it set up like a dirtjumping hardtail, but now i've got a pair of skinny slicks on it and the rigid fork back on. it's a great little city cruiser.

Although this is a SingleSpeedFixedGear forum, most everyone posts their FGs. You've got to look harder. I've got a Kona Lavadome mtb that I converted to a singlespeed and it's got 26" wheels and a rigid fork. Rides especially nice with big downhill tires. But it can also sport 26" slicks when taken on the road. Kinda like a big ass BMX bike.

I have over 250 single speed bikes at work with 26" wheels.

I have seen a video of some guy that sells fixed beach cruisers. He just kills it in the video. Must have a very low bb clearance.

I like the new Specialized Globe San Francisco 1, which is a singlespeed with 26" wheels and disc brakes. The MSRP is only $550 too.

There plenty of ss/fg 26" bikes. But there are more 29ers set up that way, as the OP noticed. Function of two things, would be my guess:

1. fewer MTB ss/fg conversions because there are far fewer MTB's with horizontal dropouts.
2. Newer MTB ss/fg are frequently 29ers also. Maybe because the kind of person who wants to explore the different possibilities presented by a 29er might also be the kind of person who wants to experience the same old trails on ss/fg for kicks?

p.s., the secret, real reason is that 29ers are fun, and ss/fg is fun, so it just makes sense to combine them and get a super-fun bike.

its called ss mtb, its gettin real popular. anyway, i built/converted a kona for my friend and it had nice 26 in' late '90's mavic wheels. 700c is just ideal for roads and companies just use it now.

I ride a 26er Fixed bike. I think it is superior when you ain't that good but had to beat traffic anyway. I am using it to get ready for a 700c, but I really like this bike. Despite the ugly looks, you can do all the skids and skipping and all that.

But it is only worth a while if you already own a good 26in frame and willing to build your wheel with a concentric hub. ... like this.
