While I don't really get the whole super-short-width bar phenomenon either, I can understand the usefulness in an urban scene. A large percentage of side view mirrors are at the same height as handlebars on many bicycles. The side view mirrors stick out the most, and this are prone to hitting your handlebars (not your hips, pedals, or shoulders).

The statement is true, but he meant to say bars above 40 cm not 30 cm. Cause that is pretty close to the pedal's width

it's in japan. They all use tiny little cable locks because theft isnt a huge problem.

Thanks for the advice! I assume the consensus is that they are basically a worthless gimmick then?

I am a fairly thin guy so I thought they might be useful, but it sounds like these are probably too extreme in any case.

I hadn't seen anyone ride with them before so I figured I would ask ... the only pics I could find were from Japanese riders/bikes.

Anyhow thanks again for the info.
