you can def score a better deal online. I got a Trek T1 for under $500 in close to new condition when it retails for over $1000. With that said if you're really set on getting it now, then I would seriously consider if you'd ever want to fit tires larger than 32s on it

it's really fricking expensive for a damn single speed.
Still enough clearance for tires and fenders like the Specialized. Seriously doubt you would part with it even if at a later date you decided to add the Tri-Cross for a stiffer all terrain bike. IMHO both good values even though the Tri-X is twice as much.

I have the 2008 57cm casserole which I built to a single speed and believe the ride is much smoother than my Cdale alum mtb that actually has wider road tires. I like the flexiblity (single/fixed/derailleur) of the Salsa, rack and fender points, and the relaxed geometry. I haven't riden the specialized though. I'm not sure how wide of tires the specialized will take. I run 28cm on my salsa with fenders but don't think i could squeeze 32cm with fenders.
salsa casseroll FTW. GF built up a geared '08 and it rides sooo smooth. She's running 32c on race fenders so its possible. Tight, but it works.

motobecane huh? what are they all about? I will be testing out the Masi special commuter tonight. I think i am going to go for the specialized. I REALLY like the salsa but 900 just seems ridiculous. And even then i still contemplater laying down my hard earned cash and riding that beauty home tonight.

just got back from my test ride on the casseroll. DAMN that is a smooth ride. I rode a 55 which was perfect. The guy at NYCvelo told me they come a little larger than most companies. Very nice looking and feeling. Damn thing is pricey though.The masi is out. It's the tri-x or the salsa at this point.....any thoughts? same price. In fact i can get the 09 specialized for 820 from another shop so it's even a little cheaper than the 900 for the salsa. tough choice.
When you consider how often and how many miles you'll be riding the bike, the price difference becomes negligible. I wouldn't let that be the deciding factor unless you absolutely have no preference for either bike.

I like my Langster. It rides really great, looks great (if you like compact road geometry style) and doesn't kill your wallet if you find a used one. I do realize these forums have a specific preference but I am just sharing mine. I like the Langster Boston.

I think you should give the Bianchi San Jose a try. It's got everything you need and wanted in a bike. Cheaper, too.

long reach brakes or:
1-get KHS Flite 100
2-get Surly cross check frame
3-put flite components on cross check and use

i cant do this anymore. My life is being overtaken by my obsession to buy a bike. I just need to buy one and get it over with. So to recap; if you had 900$ and could only choose between the tri-x, salsa, or a masi which one would you buy and why?

maybe a good cross racing bike but not a good
beat around ride everywhere bike.

The Tricross is a great all rounder. I use one as my car replacement bike, it takes me to work, getting groceries, hauling crap, off road, you name it it does it.
Here it is hauling the recycling. The Tri-x is very much a tool, very applliance like. It does whatever is asked of it.
I use the Masi more for long rides. It has a longer wheelbase and just kind of steam rolls along. I like riding it more than the Tri-x because the steel frame gives a better ride than aluminum. I ride the Masi simply for pleasure. It's likely the very same steel as the Salsa.

Congrats (half on the new bike…and half for just finally making up your mind). You won't regret. The '09 black and gray is much better looking than my '08 green. :-/
i'm running Conti Gatorskins now and have the cross tires to throw on when winter gets in full-swing. i prefer the road tires to knobbies…but it's not that bad riding them, and awesome having the option to fit wide tires AND fenders. Post pics when you get it.

The Tri-X looks very very fun. A good bike.
Steel
-longer fatigue life
-doesn't fail catastrophically
-just as corrosion resistant if you put
framesaver in the tubes.
Not saying the Tri-X is at all a bad bike, just my opinion that If I had to have one bike it would
be steel.
