Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I have a fixed gear but always ride it singlespeed. Am I still a poser? I also ride it long distance and up large hills. I cannot decide if I am a hipster or just stupid. Both? You decide!! One thing is for sure, riding a single speed up large hills makes curb stomping over opinionated big mouthes a lot easier.

I think adult big wheels will be taking over the fixed fad. Cool with me.

wtf are you talking about. Efficiency comes from the chainline. The ratio is strictly variable. in the lowest gear spinning 90 wouldn't make you go 20 mph, whereas spinning 90 on a typical ~3:1 fixed ratio will take you over 20mph.

It's like you've become so caught up with bike lust you've completely forgot the part about a human being needing to ride one to make it move...

if you have a fixed gear that you always ride singlespeed then you have a singlespeed not a fixed gear... god damnit.

Aerospoke or cog patterns in the crema of my espresso soon to be seen? FG isn't dead quite yet.... I've not seen a mass market sporting event passing itself off as counter culture having FG riding as it's main event yet. Then I'll stick a fork in it and call it dinner.

Besides I'm still hoping Ice Racing gets demo'd in 2010. Track bike racing with razor sharp ice racing tires on a speed skating oval, oh yes...

The fad might die eventually but FG will soldier on.

I one dont have the where-with-all or know-how to ride a fixie like the cool kids so I stick to a SS. Plus my knees would just explode if I tried to.
My personal is to have multiple bikes;
one for all time and enjoyment is my SS.
two for touring and when its wet because I never take those fenders off it.
three for race or attempting to race is more like it.

I do like the styling and personalization of the fixie market though, plus if it gets more people out of cars then I'm all for it.

A real boneshaker or a Hiwheeler Boneshaker? I kind of find it hard to believe someone would willingly ride a boneshaker when there are so many other options.

Track bikes went from niche-y to mainstream. So something else should come from a niche-y segment of the market for the bike fashion people to devour.

Cyclocross? Time Trial? Touring?

Same here and I would love to see it get bigger. As long as it keeps the low-key attitude.

Yes keep the Pro-Tour attitudes away from cross racing, it's a great family day at the park.

*yawn*

fixed gear will never die, but as corporations continue to pump out low priced FG's like the Cutter or the Draft, conversions probably will fade out.

on the other hand, there's always some n00b that wants an FG and thinks they can build a decent one for under $200. and where there's a n00b, there's a way...

Cross racing is too hard/cold/muddy for it to become popular. It will always be a niche sport. The bikes, however, could become more and more popular as cycling for transportation (hopefully) gains popularity. Cross bikes with wide slicks make great commuters.
