Russian Track Bike

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with any knowledge about this frame (possibly tubing?).

I really don't know anything about this brand. Is $300 for the frame/fork/headset/bb a fair price?
Thanks

$300 for a commie bike, rofl..

edit: i might buy it, i'd have to see/feel it firsthand tho.

roastbeef 12-02-08 09:59 PM

sh*t, i'd pay $300 for that bike. the made in USSR sticker is awesome.

NotSoProjectPat 12-02-08 10:01 PM

by the looks of it, the bike is blue and was manufactured in the U.S.S.R.

sorry

I saw that bike on craigslist last night. The only things I'm curious about are the quick release front wheel and the chainring on the inside of the spider.

Who cares why he has a quick release front wheel and the chainring on the inside of the spider is to give him a better chain line

That's what I'm saying. If it was originally a track bike, why would they build it so that you have to put the chainring on the inside of the spider in order to get a good chainline? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just saying that there's a probably a reason the bike is $300, so don't be expecting an NJS Keirin Track Bike. I'm leaning towards is being an old road bike with track ends switched out for the stock horizontal road drop outs.

LOL^ wow. this thread is getting r e t a r d e d. But I do agree that a "Made in the USSR" bike would be so unique that it is easily worth $300. oh yeah and...It is BB length, not frame, that determines where the chainring might go.

4doorhoor 12-02-08 11:09 PM

Those are road cranks.

trons 12-02-08 11:23 PM

looks like it'd be gaspipe

tall&lanky 12-02-08 11:32 PM

i'd put 300 down for that frame in a second. It def. looks like a track frame to me. look a the geometry, I don't see any cablestops and it doesn't look like there are any brake drillings.

buy it. put it on ebay for twice as much

huerro 12-02-08 11:33 PM

I think it's Ukrainian, not Russian.

tennisbear 12-02-08 11:43 PM

Yeah i also got the feeling it was going to be a gas pipe. I'll go check it out. I'll leave it for someone else if its not what I'm looking for though, not a big fan of the whole bicycle day trading thing.

no one is asking if it is or is not a track frame (obviously, it is). it looks like it has poor lugwork (indicator of crap) and a lot of russian track frames are gas pipe pieces of ****.

ps. ebay much? http://cgi.ebay.com/TRACK-FRAME-RECO...QQcmdZViewItem

Suttree 12-02-08 11:51 PM

I say check it out and ride it if possible. It looks cool even if it isn't the best
frame--the Ebay auction said it was Chro-Moly steel, so hopefully it isn't a lie
and just some hi-ten boat anchor of a frame. It has some character--trippy lugs
and such. See if it looks like it could be drilled for a brake if you ever decide
to put one on.

In Soviet Russia, bike brakes you!

[edit]: no retention, doesnt look like a coaster brake either.

the auction also says it weighs 3.3 kgs (2.5 frame + .8 fork) which is....... 7.25 lbs! for only 300 bucks! because it has TRACK ENDS!!!!

tennisbear 12-03-08 03:50 AM

hahah woah woah, i'll have to pass on this one. thanks for pulling up that ebay ad and saving me a drive to look at it!

If I had the money I'd spend it on that bike.
Imagine the babes you'll get when they find out you're riding a commie bike.

trelhak 12-03-08 08:02 AM

Well, it's made in the USSR, so that means it's made by Russians (great quality, there) who don't care about their product (failed Marxism) or quality control.

I've never seen a Soviet bike that wasn't made of heavy hi-ten steel.

I wouldn't pay 30 bucks for that, let alone 300, unless you're willing to pay 300 dollars for kitsch value.

jussik 12-03-08 09:10 AM

Well, I read somewhere online that the Soviet Union had only two bike factories and the one in Kharkov, Ukraine, was the one that made the 'good' bikes'. You've all seen those crazy Takhion bikes made by the same factory. The fact that the brand of the bike OP posted is written is western alphabet could point to the fact that is was not made for the domestic market. Or maybe not.

Anyhow, that bike would make a nice beater, with plenty more personality than, say, a Pake, Sparton or Kilo TT.

I would probably buy it if I was in a market for something like that and if it was my size.

the AK-47...also made by the Russians...
is great quality, a product they care about, and undergoes rigorous quality control...

Designed by a Russian, made all over the world, especially China.

According to the eBay ad, the bike takes a 25.0 mm seatpost, which indicates some heavy tubing.
