NOS - New Old Stock...aka the things most bike shops can't sell. Its mostly undamaged stuff with perhaps a little shop wear on it. Hell I've seen things listed NOS that are only a year out of date, still in original packaging, and never been taken out of it.

So are people fans of the Pake or not? I mean if they hold up well then I'd go for them because they are pretty cheap.

PS. I got my Christophe clips and straps (white leather) for $7 on ebay...I scored.

mine do. just longer screws for holding the toe clips, and run the strap under the longer screw

1fluffhead 12-04-08 10:44 AM

I have never had a nylon strap last as long as leather. Never. I am still running the same pair of MKS leather singles straps that have been on the bike for ~2 years. Only a little corrosion on the buckles and the leather is a little red from my shoes, but they are still going strong.

bmcginn 12-04-08 10:59 AM

planyourfate that helps so much

and ok so double can work fien with gr-9s im glad we got that covered

so it seems like single leathers are really good i guess.

PoopinFresh 12-04-08 11:19 AM

Anyone know of any shops selling the GR-9 with clips and leather straps as a package? I found the sylvan online, but the GR-9's larger platform is more appealing.

bmcginn 12-04-08 01:03 PM

i havent seen any combos anywhere with any of the pedals

chase. 12-04-08 02:27 PM

i have a pair of Salmo/Christophe nylons that are laminated in thick jelly vinyl, which don't fray like bare woven nylon straps do. of course they were NOS (ha) and probably haven't been made in ten years.

other bike has kashimax doubles; comfortable and i hope they hold up over time.

nahh 12-04-08 04:13 PM

I actually have 2 fairly cheap straps on each pedal. 1 Nylon and 1 Leather strap. Both Wellgo $10 straps, but they're still going strong.\

edit: This is mostly due to the fact that I'm cheap, and look for solutions using stuff I already own...

words of wisdom.

I never thought I'd break a nylon strap, then one day it just popped.

search for the toshi double thread on here. best straps ever.

crawdaddio 12-04-08 04:31 PM

And I can see why some people like the combination of leather and nylon.

i have them and i swapped to them from kashimax single straps which are arguably some of the best single straps on the market

toshi doubles DO secure your feet really well

bmcginn 12-04-08 05:13 PM

how are the kashimax singles compared to doubles

she is the owner of king kog. a fixed gear boutique in williamsberg brooklyn. they stock the nylon double straps from poland, and TONS of other cool small company items..

new old stock is what we have to go crazy bidding over on ebay when the cool stuff is no longer made cuz retired lawyers don't lust after it and spend 1000s on.. the usual reason items are discontinued.. gotta pay to play i guess.

the gr-9s aren't as good as the sylvan touring, or the super fresh sylvan streams ( same as touring, only narrower) for double toe straps.. but they do sort of work with a longer bolt..

let's be honest, most people dont cinch them down tight enough for the 2nd set to be any use anyway.. kids just like the look.. and for fixed gear stunning, aint nothing wrong with that.. but for function.. resin double gates, gr-9s (best platform for regular sneakers), and pake straps can't be beat, in my humble opinion..and they dont look 1/2 bad either.. yeeeeee.

bmcginn 12-05-08 02:15 AM

who has pake straps?
and any opinions on double nylons

rawwu 12-05-08 03:27 AM

iv recently upgraded to toshi doubles from soma doubles since they kept stretching and loosening. the somas would casue my feet to slip out while skid stops and id have to stop during rides in order to tighten my straps, which got pretty anoying. the toshis are awesome! they are actually nylon with leather SUEDE sandwiched between it which feel much more soild and secure than the leather somas. id highly reccomend toshis if you are looking to buy double straps. a pair of soma doubles would cost you nearly 40 bucks and a pair toshi doubles would definitely outlast your second pair of 40$ somas. you can find toshis on ebay for 85 bucks shipped. i found mine on craigslist for 150 with mks royal nuevo pedals and mks clips. and the other day i found another set of toshi doubles with mks sylvan track pedals and mks clips for 80 bucks. Just save some more cash and go for the toshis, you wont regret it!

edit: i found the craigslist ad if you guys are interested.

Guvna 12-05-08 08:38 AM

just switched to leather. I found that the nylon straps would tend to slip. One and a while I would look down and the buckle would be up against the toe clip, etc.

I just put together some mks sylvans. The leather fits really tightly in the cage and sort of has it's own structure. I haven't tried them but they seem to be already solving most of the problems I had...

bmcginn 12-05-08 12:41 PM

guvna are you running single or doubles?

beeftech 12-05-08 10:31 PM

I run double pake straps.
They never slip on me.
Glad I didn't drop the cash for more expensive leather doubles.
Every thing the Toshi peeps rave about I can say about the pakes.

I also use soma quad gates. But will probably get plastic cages next time around, I'm tired of having to bend my cages back every day.

Guvna 12-05-08 10:49 PM

Single. But again, haven't actually tried them yet-- waiting on the 75s. Any day now...
