Toe Straps...nylon vs. leather

So i have searched yes and come to the conclusion that doubles are sufficiently better than singles. Now for christmas i am getting new pedals and such. So i will be running mks gr-9's with some alloy toe clips.

My question is:

Nylon or leather doubles?
i hear leather is better, but is it worth 50 more bucks in the long run?
thanks for the help amigos

I run nylon singles, which I would suppose would last longer than leather doubles even. Leather ages, stretches & is subject to the elements while nylon is essentially plastic.

bmcginn 12-03-08 07:40 PM

see i have heard and read that most leather doubles have nylon sandwiched by leather, which makes them stronger and less likely to stretch

I just broke a nylon single in about a month.

toshi doubles are two layers of leather with nylon sandwiched in between. they're supposed to be the **** and last forever.

I am a fan of nylon.

bmcginn 12-03-08 08:11 PM

yea i was looking at toshi doubles and mks alphas but havent really heard anything about the mks straps. and king kog has some nylon double straps.

its just 50 buck compared to 95 for the toshi

Jake_M 12-03-08 08:25 PM

single nylons here. been using them daily for about 9 months, and still going strong.

The reason why nylon gets the bad rep it does is because it tends to slip a little. It has less friction than leather. For normal street riding I think nylon is fine. Anyone check out the Pake nylon straps that are coated?

Nylons or leather?

Nylons:

Leather:

And I can see why some people like the combination of leather and nylon.

i have single nylons now and the do slip some which is why i am considering leather. i also hear double are just more comfortable

bmcginn 12-03-08 08:45 PM

im not a fan of just nylon . . . the leather is nice. . . but the combo is quite nice

single nylon straps. ridden every day for about 3 months, yet to fail, though I would jump at the chance for toshi doubles if I could get them for cheap

If only all discussions of toe-straps would include this type of post, I probly wouldn't mind them so much. General consensus seems to be Nylon>Just Leather and Double>Singles. Some anomalies do exist, and Toshi's have a big fan club.

I'm buying right now; my plan is to buy cheap first, running first single nylons, then double nylons. If they work, awesome, and that's that. If I think they really suck hard, then I'll try leather. Considering nylons cost around 5 bucks for a pair leathers are damned expensive, I'll make due. I'm certainly not dropping near a hundred bucks for toshi doubles- ****, that's half what my bike costs.

I ride them, though not by choice. I broke a strap, and this is all the local shop had. I decided to give them a try, and they've held up great. I am satisfied. No stretch, and haven't slipped on me.

bmcginn 12-03-08 09:17 PM

i am tempted to try leather straps they are just so damn expensive. and i want to try doubles so i might go with nylon doubles. doubles seem like they would be more comfortable with less direct pressure

powergrips.

bmcginn 12-03-08 10:19 PM

what are those plasticy ones? the pake?

JayNev 12-03-08 10:23 PM

use 2 single leathers and make doubles. single leathers can be had for <10 bucks

VDB_fan 12-03-08 11:18 PM

iv'e tried it all over the years. everyone has different prefs. but this is mine:

i like the christophe double gate PLASTIC toe clips. they dont hurt my sneaker clad feet when cinched down for breakless urban riding, and the dont make a horrible scraping noise against the pavement. also, stepping on them doesnt crease them and break them like alloys. they double cate is comfy, and doesnt shift around my various sneakers.. gotta say.. these new vans toe clip specific shoes are fresh.

i also prefer nylon straps.. again, christophe is my fav.. but i recently bought some orange pake' straps from my LBS (20/20 cycles). the pake dont seem to have the same grip as the nylon christopes.. but they are good enough, and are bright as all get-out.

leather is expensive, rot in the weather (it;s seattle) and in my exp. doesnt hold like mylon. ive used lots of different brands.. although i cant remember spending 100 for any.. maybe i should try expensive ones.. but i doubt i will.

let me know if anyone tries the polish vegan dbl straps from king kog (awesome shop/people).. the clasp looks not so fresh.. hopefully im wrong, cuz i'd like them to be good.
ok. that's my .02$

50 bucks for the nylon double still seem a little steep. I guess theyre the only ones out there.

Anyone know if they make Plastic quad gate clips?

yeah.. 50 is steep.. but girl at kk is importing them from poland and trying to keep her shop open in a recession.. you gotta break bread sometimes to "support the scene".. she has some stuff for next to cost if you check her site out.. especially aerospokes. she has the lowest prices around, and some stuff IS at wholesale.. i know, i work in a shop.

some stuff, is a small fabricator.. who is trying to make their dreams come true, and we can help them, or not, and then be stuck buying NOS forever instead of cool stuff made just for us.

just sayin'..

i dont think so.. but if yr pedals have the slot for another strap.. you don't need the cage to have the extra gates.. they stay in place fine.. especially if instead of 2 singles u have doubles.

bmcginn 12-04-08 12:34 AM

wait wait...who is she? and what does NOS mean i've been curious?
