Fahgettaboudit Chain Weights

Does anyone know how much the 3.25' and 5' fahgettaboudit chains weigh?

More than you could begin to imagine. After a while you get used to it, though. I wouldn't bother with the 5' one, if I were you.

Track bikes are always the same weight. The lighter the bike, the heavier lock you need to protect it.

Bikes: Serotta Colorado III Track (Renyolds Ouzo Pro Aero Fork, Dura-Ace to Mavic CXP-14 wheels, Sugino crank, Thomson and 3T the rest), Steelman Cyclocross (Campy Record 10, Deda Newton & Thomson stuff)

If you're worried about the weight don't buy one, they are a lot!

I use one, but rarely ride with it. I leave it on the rack I always use at school, and use a smaller u-lock elsewhere.

Also, wearing one around your waist and then falling sucks really bad.

if youre looking for that level of protection with portability, try the fahgettaboudit u lock. its still quite a monstrous lock but much more manageable. mine has been fantastic for me in my lovely community.

I agree. It's heavy but it locks up my rear wheel and frame just fine and it would be a huge PITA for a thief to have to defeat.

I just got an Abus CityChain X-Plus 1060 from eBay. It's 110 cm long (approximately 3.6 ft) and weighs 2686 g (approximately 5.9 lbs).

I really have to wonder, if you need a 10 pound chain, do you really want to be leaving your bike outside to begin with?

The one I got was on sale for $136, but I used a 30% off Live Cashback rebate on it to bring the price down $40 more. It looks like the cheapest price right now is $144. Unfortunately, there are very few retailers that stock the Abus locks in the US, so they are difficult to find and expensive.

if you buy a 5' one, you can split it with a friend. buy a evo disc lock and use an angle grinder to cut it down. you now have two locks you can wear on your waist (~32") at a relatively decent price.

unless yr a fat.

the original quote is " All bicycles weigh fifty pounds. A twenty pound bike needs a thirty pound lock. A thirty pound bike needs a twenty pound lock. A forty pound bike needs a ten pound lock. And a fifty pound bike doesn't need a lock."

But your way is faster. I like your way.

One of my friends wants to trade me a NY Chain for my Mini. I've been tempted, since the Mini is great, but can't lock up to a lot of stuff, and it's hard to carry without pockets.

I can't tell you how much they weigh, because mine is locked up to the bike rack at work - it's so heavy I just leave it there all the time. The krypto mini travels with me.

I just bought the Faggetaboutit U-lock instead of the chain. It is a mini lock but not quite as small as the evolution mini (which, by the way, in NYC is not park of kryptonites insurance thing, only locks labeled "new york"). The Chain weighed waaaay (weigh) too much to even consider. The U lock still weighs probably 7 lbs, when put through a belt loop it can take my pants off. The u lock got better reviews and seems to be almost uncutable (i know there is no such thing). It fits nicely though my wheel/seatstay/parkingmeter and was only $80 at Verrizanno bike shop in Bay Ridge.

I heard a great quote somewhere, "at a certain point, if your lock becomes uncuttable, the theif will just cut through whatever it is locked to"

I am now noticing that most things I lock this thing too would be relativley easy to cut (fences, sign posts, bike racks). Moral of the story: buy the u-lock, not the chain, and then bring your bike inside whereever you go (i have found most dive bars in brooklyn dont mind you bringing a bike inside)

i concur on everything you said about its performance and comparison with the chain. i think the nyfu is "only" 4 or 5 pounds, and its not too hard to find one under $50.
