Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

the new hip wheel

this is one of my friends bikes. It is just his polo bike/ cheaper junky. he got this wheelchair wheel. Went to the hardware store and found an appropriately sized bolt and vwalla. 8 spoke for the win. It's a heavy beast. About a 26" so were hoping to find a tubular tire to fit it, that could be a challenge.

wheelchair wheels are not built to handle the stresses that a bike wheel experiences

I think the title is actually supposed to be "the new-hip wheel" as in "if you use this wheel you're gonna need a new hip"

Bikes: I have cut my stable down to one bike in hopes to make room for a roadie.

Some wheelchair wheels are actually structurally more sound than a bike wheel, but those wheels are gonna cost more than a bike wheel.

If you need tires just go to a medical supply store. My old man got one from them.

Theres a crazy guy in the City who rides a bike with a wheelchair wheel. He claims its better because it cant get flats, but I've heard it flexes a lot. Also solid rubber gets a lot of holes in it from the street.

Its been done before by other people too.
